Default 400rwhp

Late February, early March I'm goin gto do the mods. I called a local guy. With the goal of 400RWHP, the guy told me Cam & Head package will put me there but it'll cost me over $6K. He then suggested Cam & Headers. He said it'll cost me btwn $2,500 - $2,800 out the door and will also get me to my goal. Is this true? If so, why would anyone go to the first package over the second?

Thanks!

400RWHP is easy to get out of a cam bolt on car these days out of a LS motor.

You should first get full intake and exhaust boltons, then a head/cam package together and matched to each other. Exhaust and intake around 1200, budget nice head/cam package around 2k from TSP and you will make well over 400Hp at the wheels.

Guys, I appreciate your feedback but my question is, why do a cam/head package for $6K, when I could do a cam/header package for under $3K?
And I have an 01' T/A A4.

Because Heads & Cam will give you more power than Cam & Headers... For some people, 400RWHP is not enough, and it will be very easy to achieve that with bolt-ons and a cam. If you feel the need to step it after that, do the heads

Dre01SS, thanks man. Do you think that $6K is outrageous for a Head and Cam package?

Dude, I dyno'd 421 rwhp with a cam only (236/236/112lsa) pulley, ported throttle body and headers.

I did the work (labor) myself and I only had about 2k in the whole package.

With a Heads & Cam package you can put a lot smaller (tamer) cam in to achieve 400RWHP because the heads will flow better and may raise your compression a little.

You can just put a cam in and achieve the same HP however it will probably be a bigger duration and lift cam and not be AS tame as a smaller cam with heads (depends on tuning really)

Heads and big cam = Heads and cam will typically produce better torque than just a single cam-only car, but HP may be near the same.

Josh, that's freaking impressive. I don't know how to do the labor.
But what do you think about $6K for cam and heads.

6k for heads and cam is a little expensive unless your going with a AFR or a trickflow head.

i agree with the right cam you can make 400 rwhp. but you also will need a nice size stall since your an automatic car. just get an ls6 intake, ported throttle body a set of longtubes catted or ory ( depending on emissions) and a catback back. then pick your cam out. another think to consider is what are you goals for this car? that might help you make your choice.

6k is expensive. labor could be around 1500 the cam say 500 custom grind the heads r around 2500 plus mis.parts gaskets such 200 = 4700. and that is a little high. it will be cheaper if u buy a head cam package from someone like loyd elliot. at e port works who does head porting. and will do a custom grind cam.u should be between 1200-2000 total.it will bring your cost down a pretty good bit and could probly get it done for around 3500-3800.but you will still have to get it tuned that will cost about 500 for a dyno tune.it sounds like a lot of money but shops have a lot of over head so it jacks the price up.

What is your goal with the car? Fast street car, track car, or just say you have 400rwhp? What kind of driveability are you after?

Fast street car. It's used primarily on weekend.

Hmmmm...

Budget Heads 1500.00
Camshaft-389
Pushrods-115
Long tubes w catted Y pipe-1000 ish depending on brand
ported TB-100
NGK TR55s-25.00
Fluids-50.00
Pulley w/belts &bolt-300ish
Install-800
Tune 475.00

Total-4754.00...... I didnt quote this guy, but his #s dont seem far fetched... A lil more cash on the heads/Labor rate a tad higher/better headers.... All of these could EASILY push the # to $6000.00

Just food for thought
