For $40-50k, I'd buy the finest condition 67RS/SS Camaro and install an aluminum BB w/FI. I can't see spending 100k on any vehicle. Just my 3 cents!

For 100K you could have bought 4 new Z28's, or 2 new Z06's. .

Fantastic cars. Seen many of them. Every product that has come from GMMG is well researched, excellent products. Every one that has seen one of these cars in person (if they had the money to spend) would buy one.

They are very nice Camaros, I saw quite a few of them on the Hotrod Power Tour. $100K nice? HELL no. But hey, if people are buying them for that price I don't blame GMMG for selling them at that price. Personally, if I wanted to spend $100K on a Camaro "collectible", I'd pick a rare 1st gen instead.

For $50-60K range, the ZL1 would be a better deal. Keep in mind that the C5R block alone adds $6K to the price. Ouch.

Most of our sponsors here would build you a 427ci engine for about $13-15K. The C5R block would add another $4K over a resleeved LS1 block. That puts you around $17-19K max for a C5R 427ci from any of our reputable sponsors on this site. And, you will most likely get a bit more performance out of those builders for less money.

Really, do you honestly think that these severely overpriced 4th gens are going to jump up in value? If anything, I'd expect them to drop in value, or just hold their current value.

Now, a rare optioned 1st gen RS-Z28, or an RS/SS 396ci convertible, etc... would be about half of this price right now and continue to increase in value.

Although they are definetly not worth 100k, I wonder what they will be worth in 35 to 40 years.

Wow $100k...damn...True that you could build one up for way cheaper and this and that but ....there are people out there who can afford to pay that much for that camaro...regardless the performance and stuff....The thing is IF and only IF you had the money ....why not?....there's only a certain number made so collectors will pay that much.......Look at Todd McFarlane and how much he paid for both HR ***** by Bonds and McGwire.....Now what would he do with a Baseball that is worth so much....talkin a couple of millions...He can't play with it!....and how many ***** could he buy for the price of one?..but that's beside the point....So I think if you would have the money you would probably buy one but that's just me!!!! ...and Like Unit said if I had the money I definitely wouldn't buy a camaro ...not that I don't like them but honestly having that much money.....buying the most prolific camaro would be like buying a an everyday beater assuming
I had money!!......that's my two cents....

Tony,

The 427s are making 505/500 on EVERY car with the exception of the first 2 or 3. This is with AWESOME drivability and MILD tuning. THe 23k price is set up as MTI does their 427 package IE injectors, headers, exhaust, induction, tuning ALL 427 SPECIFIC.

As for not gaining value, every car that has been resold has netted a profit of ATLEAST 20,000 to the original customer. Not too shabby for a ragged ole 4th gen.

This is definately a different league than most of the guys are in here on Tech. The market is there though. Also, the cars are priced around 83,000 not 100,000. The big dollar cars got MANY options not dicsussed so far. 83,000 for a BRAND NEW car, C5R block based 427, custom paint, suspension, wheels, interiors blah blah blah. The list goes on. Its more than a Camaro with a 20k motor.

Nuff said.

So, are you saying that the prices are not marked up beyond what a "normal" car sale % is, after all the mods? Do you really feel it takes $83K to build a 427ci 4th gen Camaro, with all the bolt-ons and a custom paint job?

BTW, for $21K, MTI will convert a bone stock 4th gen F-body into a 427ci package, with all the bolt-ons, transmission upgrades (plus converter or clutch), etc... and still have a 2-year 24K mile warranty.

New Camaro - $23-26K
MTI 427ci complete package - $21K
Custom paint job - $6K
C5R block upgrade $4K
Fikse wheels - $2800

Total = $59.8K with warranty

83K? with no warranty?

Tony, its obvious you dont appreciate the cars, thats cool. You simply CAN NOT compare this car to a Z28 with an MTI motor....... If ya could why didnt yours sell for 100k and have magazine articles out the ***?? Like I said.....

As for pricing, you are ALMOST correct. Lets add in custom interiors, cosmetics, Penske CUSTOM
( IE, not available to the public) shocks, custom GMMG WELD IN rollcage, line lock, FULL GM 1LE suspension, CUSTOM swaybars, the list goes on and on. Its not a motor in a damn stock Camaro.

BTW, MTIs' motors, as awesome as they are, dont begin to touch these 427s as far as internals go. I know exactly what MTI uses on their 427 engines and for the 21k you are getting top of the line parts by any means. As for power, I still see MTI laying down 490s to 500s all the time unless its a purpose built motor. The ZL1s consistantly lay down 505/500 THROUGH cats and a Y pipe spinning heavy *** 18" wheels/tires. They drive like stock to boot.........

As for warranty, the dealer doesnt offer one as GM has their hands tied. Ask ANY customer though that has EVER called GMMG with ANY type of problem how they were treated and if it was handled before they could bat an eye...

As for any markup... People do build cars to make money dont they? I mean GMMG does have bills to pay, Im sure.... IS it far fetched or anything out of the ordinary?? I couldnt tell you because I dont work at a dealership nor do I know what they are marking the cars up to. What I do know is that there are SEVERAL ORIGINAL ZL1 owners who still have their original ZL1s who purchased the 02 ZL1s and couldnt be happier with them. Its a collectors world, not a Drag racers. There is a difference. The fact this car is what it is makes it worth more than any old 427 Z28 on the street. It has a background and a meaning. As said before it is todays COPO car ( BTW, all ZL1s were ordered through GMs COPO department to add to the theme of the 69s.

Youre a smart man Tony, you do the math. You were at 59.8 using the low side of your totals. Add in another 10k in parts you missed, then add in a typical dealer markup,( how much money is made on a typical 70k car from a dealer anyway?) and you are at the 83k average price of a Phase III ZL1.

The old muscle cars are fun to look at but that's about all in most cases. There is always something going wrong with them. I've owned several old muscle cars and I wouldn't go on a trip in any of them.(I'll probably buy a hemi before long but mainly just to look under the hood.) That's why I bought a ZL1. Plus I'm a camaro lover. I drive my SS or the ZL1 more than the Z06. Can't explain, I just love the camaros.

I took #51 to Lamar Walden today. Mine will be a little different in that it will have real .090 C5R heads, Strange 4.10 (I think) rear end, twin disc clutch, drive shaft and many other little touches such as throwing that piece of junk Hurst shifter in the trash and replacing trans. forks with stronger steel pieces. We will dyno with the GMMG exhaust and then a custom true dual. The results will be interesting.

BTW - we dynoed (?) the stock LS6 with 3.73 rear end today and got 342 and 348 at the rear wheels through the GMMG exhaust. It was running extremely lean.

The car may or may not ever be worth what I'll have in it, but I really don't think I'll care by the time it would matter. I didn't buy the car to sell or as an investment. I bought it to make it exactly the way I want it.

Cammin BeaSSt - I agree with everything you said . I personally love the ZL1 camaro's and if I was making a mad amount of money I would buy one... but then that would be after I bought a newer viper
