Cammin, I can definitely appreciate the ZL1s, but I cannot justify the price. The original ZL1s were made by GM, not an aftermarket company like GMMG. They were a "true" GM collectible performance car, available thru any Chevy dealership. Yes, these cars are limited production collectibles, but $100K for a Camaro?

I based my $59K on the upper end of my estimate, and those prices were already marked up. You don't mark up costs that have already been marked up. I could build one with my connections for under $45K. I had way more parts on my Formula than a ZL1 does, and stayed under $50K, including the purchase of the new car.

But like I said, if someone is willing to pay that much, more power to them. If I could consider $1000 as a dollar in my wallet, I might have another perspective on it. I fully understand that these cars are not built with value in mind, but I still think the price is about 20% too high for what you get.

PS, I saw a ZL1 dyno at the Power Tour on the portable Dynojet and it put down 485 rwhp. That was an M6 car. Respectable, but not the "505" you keep repeating.

LWA recently tuned a red ZL1 427 to about 525 rwhp as best I remember. Keep in mind GMMG could and would not have built the ZL1 without the go-ahead from GM, not that much different than the SS really.

Cars are generally not good investments. Buy them to drive and enjoy. Invest in stocks and/or your own business.

How much would the 69 ZL1 cost today (if it was bought new today, not how much it is worth today)?

Flipping a car and making 20k profit isnt a good investment?? I need to buy some stocks

I think Nineball is just jealous because he cant even afford a REAL toolbox much less a ZL1

If you think you can buy one of these for 83-100K and turn around and sell it for 20K profit, have at it. Lemme know how it turns out.

So yes, I'd rather take my chances on turning 20K with stocks. Stocks go up and down 20% all the time.

GMMG --> <-- Cammin BeaSSt

I'll be the first to admit I can't afford a $100K Camaro. If I could afford it, I still wouldn't buy a Camaro for $100K. You seem to make it sound like the ZL1 Camaro is the end-all be-all Camaro and nothing out there that costs less is better. You could easily build one yourself for around $60K, you and I both know it.

Hahahah

Colonel, Ive seen it happen so far with about 15 of the ZL1s. They have gone for over 130k on Ebay already with an original purchase price of 85k

Nineball, ya got me man. I am on GMMGs nuts, kinda goes with the job Trust me, I dont think the ZL1 is the end all car out there. It is a badass setup though. I was simply trying to get you to see another perspective, as I already see the drag racers standpoint. As for duplicating it, yup ya COULD build a SIMILAR Camaro for mid 70s even high 60s skimping on some parts, but it would still be another modded Camaro. NOT a GM backed, collectors world Authentic ZL1 SuperCar. That, my friend, is the difference

Now get off the internet and go play with that lil Sears box ya got.

I've seen tech stock IPOs go for $5 and sell at $30 by the end of the day too...but that doesn't mean I'll be buying any IPOs anytime soon. Past performance in no way guarantees future performance. I'll buy $100K of GM stock way before I'll buy $100K of one of their cars for an investment.

In general, cars are terrible investments. There are some lucky exceptions to every rule (sometimes people fall out of airplanes with no parachutes and live!)...but that doesn't mean I'll be dumb enough to try it.

Hmmmm, I like my tool box. Works just great for my home use. I guess you must be a mechanic, where having a big, expensive, fancy tool chest rollaway is useful. Also somewhat of bragging rights between other mechanics. Sorry to disappoint you.

You can go to work and look at your big toolbox. I go to work and have a huge office with a window view, oak desk, leather chairs, and a young personal secretary. A much better life than when I started out, as a pipe fitter and then a welder in the chemical plants. You would have been proud of my tool chest back then lol.

Reggie Jackson, who owns Lamar Walden's original #51 ZL1 (the one I need to have a matching pair!) for $300,000.00 I understand it was someone who saw the car at the Barrett auction then contacted Reggie.

As far as these cars not being the ultimate camaro, I don't know what else I could do to mine and stay reasonably faithful to the original 427 ZL1s. Sure the prototype big block is hot but you are never going to see anything like that produced as anything but one offs.

okay, then how much could someone buy a ZL1 for, directly from GMMG? I'm also curious how GM "backs" them, but offers no warranty on paper. Does GMMG offer that warranty on paper seperately?

Who's idea was it to allow ANY of those ZL1s to drive out with the factory 10-bolt? lol

GMMG only sold through dealers. Mine with optional interior, line lock, fikse profil FM10s after dealer and GM discounts was $51,130. GM warranties all OE parts. They have to.

Matt knew many of these cars would be garage queens and the guys who wanted an after-market rear end would chose what they wanted. Most of the 427 owners I talk to have or will swap rear ends.

Keep in mind that in 1969 you could buy a Mercedes for $7k. The cars (ZL1s) would not sell. In fact I believe the 19 returned cars (of which the first, #51 was given to Lamar Walden) is the only time GM has ever allowed a dealer to return cars.

The 69 Camaro (the hot ones) was not appreciated as a muscle car until many years later. Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. IMH the last generation of Camaro SS is a muscular looking car that is seldom photographed at it's best angles. That's why I own an 02 1LE SS also. I think they are beautiful. And fun.

Oh, and cars as investments? I've got a real knack in that department. Bought a 66 Shelby Mustang Paxton supercharged out of LA in the mid 80s. Sent a mechanic who drove it back to Atlanta, put about $1,000. in it and sold it a year later for $17,500. I was real proud of myself.....then a few weeks later I found out the guy I sold it to had it pre-sold for $35,000. Idoit!!!

God only knows what it's worth today.

I know people think the price is crazy, and I'm not saying it's a steal, but you can't really compare the price with what it would cost to build yourself. Try to get Dale Earnhardt Inc. to build you a c5r motor and see how much it costs. That's where the ZL1 c5r's are built.
