Seeing interesting info on 1LE
I've read around the internet that the 1LE package was only offered on red, white, and black cars. Is this true?
How rare would a bone stock 2001 SS be, NBM, hard top, black leather, 1LE, M6, power windows, defrost, ZR1's, etc be?

Anyway, in regards to your color question, you have false information. The only color restrictions for a 1LE car would be color restrictions for a Z28.

2001 & 2002 are not "special" in the same context as the 88-99's. As has been discussed several times in this section (even recently if you'd scroll down the page), the 01&02 1le option was a second sticker from slp. It's debatable what one feels about them being "true" 1le's...

I don't believe there were any color restrictions with regard to 1LE. There were definitely no color restrictions for Z28 color from '93-'02. There's not a single color that was available on a V6 Camaro that wasn't available on a Z28 or vice-versa. Only the '96-'97 RS, '96-'02 SS, '98-'02 sport appearance package, and some other minor things had color restrictions.

I'm biased because I have an '02 SLP 1LE, but I consider them true 1LEs. I know SLP used GM 1LE springs and I think they used the GM 1LE bushings. SLP did use their own swaybars. GM asked SLP to do the 1LE option, not the other way around. Finally, while it wasn't a GM RPO, it was still ordered through the dealer.

If a 01-02 SLP 1LE is to be considered a true 1LE, then all of the Level II suspension LT1 SLP cars need to be included as SLP installed all of the same GM 1LE parts with the exception of the Konis on these cars.

Do you have documentation on this? Everything I've ever read or heard about this dating back to 2001 was that GM was cost cutting and no longer saw value in offering this option (same for no more WS6 Formulas). SLP knowing the enthusiast awareness and marketability of the 1LE option "borrowed" this setup and installed the parts as a 1LE option package on their Y2Y cars.

... aren't the shocks on the original 1LE (RPO code style 1LE) Koni? I don't want to have to look this up. The SLP 1LE suspension option may be a lot different from the earlier 1LE RPO code cars. We should figure this out...

It's a perceptual deal with the package. There are those (myself included) that feel if the delete option wasn't on the car when it rolled off the Van Nuys, Norwood, or St Therese assy line, then it''s not a true 1LE factory built car. This is not to disparage the SLP examples, it's just that the guy hanging the shocks on the car didn't get a paycheck from GM and there in lies the rub. SLP was a contracted outsource agent period, and of the few hundred that were built none of them were exactly purpose built lightweights like the GM one's.
I have owned one of the four built 1988 1LE camaro's as well as a couple 01-02's with the option. Neither will ever see appreciation like most hope for. To the serious collector the 88-99's will always be more desireable.. with 88's and 99HOSS's commanding top value because of the low production total(s)
All JMHO

My thoughts mirror LBU2. I have owned, and do own several Pontiac 1LEs.I have been interested in these cars since they came out.I'm am old school, and these are as close as it gets to the cars we called strippers in my youth. It had to have at least one delete on the invioce. 2 or 3 being preferred.
If I remember correctly the 20th TA had several 1LE parts, but it wasn't a 1LE. IMO the SLP cars are Firehawks or SSs with the 1LE option. A fine line for sure.

This issue of legitimacy and such isn't really going to affect value too much I don't think.
It really depends on the buyer. Personally, I'd much rather have a high optioned SS with 1LE suspension from SLP than a stripper model with oil cooler, no A/C, cloth seats, and such from the mid-90s.

It's healthy to have debate,it shows the passion for the option. There are those like Willie and myself that see a direct link to the COPO era cars that were stripped versions ordered specifically for track apps, and then the last fourth gen owners who wanted increased suspension performance.
I would however venture to say 90% of the buyers of 01-02's that checked off the ordering box didn't have a clue what the RPO meant historically. It used to be "level 2 or 3 suspension" with Bilsteins on say the 30th SS's, but shocks do not make the package. GM went several years before incorporating Konis with the option because they weren't showroom stock OEM parts and therefore illegal in certain classes of racing.
By the time they did include them the cars were really no longer active in say SCCA nationals, but were in Pro Solo. There are ultra purists that feel the third gens are only the true 1LE's and lump even the fourth gen GM builds in with the 01-02 SLP cars. Those incorporated the most expansive amount of components relative to performance, there wasn't a dealer in the country in his right mind that would have ordered one of those for inventory because of the harsh ride. JMHO

We could simply agree that "1LE" and "1LE suspension" are apples and oranges but since apples and oranges are both good...
Mixing up historical 3rd gen 1LE information with the 4th gen discussion going on is really confusing the issue throughout this topic though. That's not apples to oranges, that's more like apples to pineapples.

I'm kind of glad to see a nice discussion on this topic for sure. I like it. To me it's just something else that sets mine apart from another. That's all. Will my car be worth more? No one can answer that unless they can see 30-40 years into the future. It will probably be long gone by then and I'll see one like it on Barret Jackson or something similar when I'm on my deathbead and it will throw me over the edge. LOL

LS14EVR, I think there's one thing we can all agree on. Your car having the SLP 1LE suspension definitely makes it more enticing than an equal car with stock suspension.
