Default 2002 camaro ss how to verify if true ss

2G1FP22G622164701

2002 camaro ss slp

Above went to look at a 2002 camaro ss with t-tops 84k miles had grey interior, 6 speed. Something looked fishy though, how can you be sure to verify if it is a true ss?

In addition if i take it somewhere can they scan it for check engine codes for how long back?

Pm or email me any info.

what made it look fishy?

the things to look at are the floor mats, to Bilstein Level II Suspension, Chrome ZR-1 wheels, SLP Grille (01-02 only), Hurst Shifter etc.

check the door jam for the SLP build stickers or call SLP 1(732)349-2109 and give them the VIN, they will tell you! Hope it all works out!

On the RPO sticker it will have WU8 and Y2Y. All SS cars went to SLP and they all have BOTH of those RPO codes.

Talking true ss from slp

Call SLP and give them the vin # and they will verify the vin number. Not all slp cars have the sticker on the inside of the door. Mine doesnt have the sticker on the door, but I called slp with the vin # and it was verified.

True that all SS cars went thru SLP and have RPO WU8, but NOT ALL SSs had Y2Y additional SLP options. So NOT ALL SSs will have both WU8 and Y2Y.

OP, check your VIN here for the RPO codes (YES, it has both WU8 and Y2Y).

My SS has the Y2Y RPO and no additional SLP content, no red SLP option stickers, nothing. It has the minimum to make it an SS.

That's nice. But it doesn't prove that all SS cars also had RPO Y2Y. Do the math:

'98 SS: 3025, w/ Y2Y: 496
'99 SS: 4829, w/ Y2Y: 1837
'00 SS: 8913, w/ Y2Y: 5159
'01 SS: 6332, w/ Y2Y: 5373
'02 SS: 11,191, w/ Y2Y: 10,625

When you count each and every RPO your car has, having a "1 of 1" happens quite often. However most people who care about "rarity" only care about the year, model, body style, color, transmission, engine and any other "performance" option (like SS, WS6, Firehawk, etc). Nobody cares about your rare trunk-mounted cigar lighter and wouldn't count that towards "rarity". That is why CompNine's RPO listing gives you the option to de-select those irrelevant RPOs and keep just the important ones that "count".

It's still 1 of 1 when I de-select the trunk-mounted cigar lighter.

Another way to check to see if it's a real SS is to check the tire pressure sticker in the door jamb under the RPO sticker. ALL SS's came with 17" wheels. If the sticker says 17" wheels with 275/40/17's then you're got a real SS. If it says 16", run! lol.

But the RPO of WU8 like stated above will do it too.

Make sure the door sticker VIN matches the VIN plate.
If it had a donor for the hood, spoiler, and wheels, it could have an SS door too.

And if you want to verify the VIN plate, peel the weather stripping back on the passenger side windshield pillar, theres a 6 digit VIN stamped there with translucent blue plastic tape over it.

Chrome wheels mean nothing, the floor mats mean nothing, the suspension means nothing, the grille means nothing, and the Hurst shifter means nothing. An SS could be ordered without any of those options, and therefore none of them are indicative of a car being a "true" SS.

Look on the drivers side door jamb; "WU8" should be in the list of RPO codes. WU8= true SS/Firehawk/Trans Am. Additionally, the Y2Y RPO code signifies that the car went through SLP in New Jersey. On the passengers side door jamb, SLP should have placed a sticker with all added content laid out:
i.e. 345HP Center Mount Exhaust, Auburn Differential, Car Cover, etc.
Keep in mind not all SS Camaros have second-sticker SLP content.

The last step would be to call SLP and they can verify over the phone.

Do not worry about the fact that the Carfax reports the vehicle as a Z28; this happens to all SS Camaro's. The reason behind this is that some Z28 models were chosen to be sent to SLP for the upgrade.

Summary:The quickest identification tool is the door jamb sticker. "WU8" is the SS RPO code, and should be listed alongside all of the cars other options. Verify that the VIN on the door jamb sticker matches the VIN in the windshield. Done.

Or the reason could be that all SSs also have RPO Z28. Or possibly the "G" in the 6th character location in the VIN# (that indicates a V8) automatically triggers Carfax to report "Z28" for Camaros (for both Z28s and SSs) and "Formula" for Firebirds (for both Formulas and T/As). Just sayin'.
