i just recently sold my wrecked 2000 ws6 to someone and he called last night saying it was a rare formula. i noticed it said formula on the title when i sold it to him, but didnt think much of it.
so today i pulled out my 2001 ws6 title and noticed it also says firebird formula. could this just be a mistake by the state of illinois refering to all of them as formulas? carfax refers to it as a FIREBIRD FORMULA/TRANS AM, i always thought both my ls1s were just regular ws6 transams. ive looked around a lil on production numbers here but am still curious. i thought i read the formulas were only 98-00. kev

'Most all' of the titles refer to them as Formula on the title. Or Formula / Trans Am.
They actually get the 'Formula' package which means the V8 transition from the standard Firebird. Then some Formula's get the 'Trans Am' adder package also.
What's the front end look like? Does it have the two big round driving/fog lights a couple feet apart in the front bumper? If so, Trans Am. T/A also gets the 'uplevel' spoiler also.
Two many details to list without seeing an actual photo of the car, or seeing the actual door tag RPO code sticker.
Yes, the WS6 package is a bit more rare to see on the Formula cars than the T/A's also.

Formula were made frome 98-02 and are rarer than trans ams. The WS6 was available for formulas from 98-00 and rarer yet. Look at both cars and see if there are different bumper designs and spoilers. Formulas and Trans ams are grouped together because of the V8 drivetrain. They use slightly different body appointments and the TA has more features standard.

My title says firebird formula. My car is clearly a Trans Am Firehawk. I guess it really doesnt mean much...I had the same confusion, as previously stated its the firebird with the V8 drivetrain. At least its easier than the third gens. There were so many crazy option combinations that could be made.

As was said, all Firebirds w/ a V8 are "Formulas". Some of those had the "Trans Am" appearance package. WS6 was an option on either of those '96-'00, and only on T/As '01-02.
Don't count on titles for accuracy, the RPO decal holds the "truth". My '00 Lincoln LS was originally titled by prior owner (and subsequently re-titled and registered by me) as a "Ford", which I had initially thought was odd, but didn't give it a 2nd thought. Then a month or so ago a cop stopped me and told me I had an invalid registration since my tags were registered to a "black Ford", not a "black Lincoln". He was so irate about this totally insignificant detail I thought he was going to pistol-whip me. DICK. Told me to get it straighted out ASAP. Yeah, right, in the mess that the IN BMV is in now? I don't think so. I'll be lucky to renew my license in less than 4 hours.

The correct terminology for a Trans am is a Firebird Formula Trans Am (WS6)
Instead of looking at the title to figure out what youre car is, formula or trans am, look at the front bumper. Completely different things
