You still need to add labor and other parts costs into that Bore/hone the block, line hone the mains, install new cam bearings, balance rotating assy, assemble the whole deal, etc.. 4500 is cheap for a 408 if you can get it...

What are you looking for in a 408? We can do one for cheaper depending on parts or for more depending on parts. It's all in what you want. We do our own machine work and I have built a few 9 and 10 second LS1s. Give us a call tomorrow if you can.

Hey Brian, I apologize if it looked like I was stepping on your toes. I wasn't meaning to but you were the last one to post when I sent that in. I was just saying that there is more than one way to build a 408 shortblock and we do this work as well. Like I said I've built a few and I have three right here going together as we speak. I try not to use my customer's names unless they like it AND they have some kind of unique accomplishment. Maybe Chuck will put up a customer page on our web site later but that is up to him and our customers. We do all machining on our shortblocks right here in house except the Darton Mid Sleeves. I've done engine work from machining to assembly almost all my life from motorcycles to boats to cars and even hay bailers! I've also done way more than LS1 stuff and the LS1 stuff I've done and been a part of with SAM is well known and published in countless magazines.
We will specialize in the LS1 stuff here at HPE since that is what our new shop is mostly about but I also do a lot of Ford and BBC stuff as well.

As the owner of HPE, it was brought to my attention that we had possibly offended the guys at APE. I just personally want to clarify that the posts written by HPE personnel on this thread in no way shape or form were an attempt to flame or take business away from APE. We are all in this together. LS1tech is a big happy family, and I don't want to see this board turn into a big flame fest like has been on other LS1 based boards. We are a friendly company, and give compliments were compliments are due. I have heard nothing but good about Chris and Brian at APE, and feel they are just as qualified as everybody on here says they are! I'd prefer HPE not get involved in internet wars with other shops. It is not professional, and first come first served isn't either. We are all paying members of LS1tech, therefore we have a right to state our opinions within reason. The things stated in this thread by those of HPE, may have been perceived as a personal insult, or a request for a potential customer to choose us over another shop. I just want to clarify that this is not what HPE is about, and I will personally do my best to control this from happening again in the future. I prefer our products speak for themselves at the track, and via our customers. Not us having to promote ourselves on the internet. Numbers and customers speak much bigger words than we could ever speak about ourselves. So that is where things shall remain. I apologize to Brian and Chris for possibly feeling personally insulted by this thread, and I promise I will do my best to control this from happening again. I have the utmost respect for you guys, and look forward to competing with some of your cars at the track
