Default speaker grills covered...

so i went to walmart and picked up a little bit of charcoal grey fabric that was rather stretchy, and some 3m upholstry adhesive, and went to work on my speaker grills.

the cheap plastic bothered me, and i thought it looked kinda cheap, so i covered them..

tell me what you think...

Whatever floats your boat...it's your car. Personally, I don't see the factory grilles as cheap looking - they look, well, factory.

i don't think the photo's really justify the look.

the factory grills looked alright for me, they just didn't "float my boat"

figured i'd put my own touch to them..

Yup...that's my point. It's your car, you should do whatever you feel is best and not worry about what anyone else might say.

I like the suede look as well on them. I was thinking about doing the same.

it's not that hard.

a can of 3m upholstery spray adhesive, and you can pick up some suede material, at any fabric shop, even hobby lobby, or walmart for a few dollars a yard.

spray it on the grill, and the backing of the fabric, and wait for it to tack up, and lay it on there, and smooth it around the edges.

took me about an hour for all the grills.

eh...might just be the pics, but the plastic-fabric boundary just doesn't look right.. I would be careful with spraying that glue on the spk. covers as well...especially around tweeters.

Also, that fabric has to hurt SQ to some degree.. Fabric isn't the best medium for sound to have to travel through, even though it is very thin in your application. I would have used something acoustically transparent, like microphone windscreen material (I found some a while ago sold in square feet...wouldn't want that look thou). There are acoustically transparent fabrics available as well that look good.

i would think he took the covers off to spray the adhesive i like it except for the tweeter cover shows a different texture

i've seen pix with the inner fabric removed and it looks pretty good, i had thought about doing this but figured it'd look like sh*t has anyone else tried this? pix can be deceiving.

Ive removed the fabric from the inside and painted mine red. Looks better with fabric removed in my opinion..

the suede covers were on a members car that did a custom set up, he took out the back seat and put a sub box there.

i took the covers off, and the reason the tweeter one looks kind of different is because it's facing the camera, and the other isn't. also, the fabric had to be stretched a little tighter on the tweeter covers.

i chose the fabric i did for a reason.
i found some more "transparent" kind that was really thin, but i didn't want you to be able to see the speaker grill still, so i chose a little thicker version.
i haven't really noticed any difference in the sound, it's still loud, and still sounds alright, i will be replacing the speakers throughout the car very soon though.

here's some better pictures, from further away...

i like...figured with a thin fabric u couldn't avoid that. thats why i was wondering about the suede-thanx. i realize that fabric especially a thicker one like suede will dampen sound but my door speakers are mounted with kappa grillz and i likely won't be able to turn it all the way up inside the car anyways. i was plannin on finishing my interior with charcoal vinyl and maybe red suede. i think it looks great and you matched the interior very well. also good with cloth seats

Suede is WAY too sound blocking. Don't even consider it.

Suede will screw up sound at any frequency.
