Default GP GTP asked for it and almost got "slapped"

Well I was with my girl last night, on the way home from a friends house. I am making a right hand turn, from a stop, onto a four lane road. There is a car coming in the outside lane, I pull into the inside lane. I am doing about 30 in 2nd and the car that was coming slams on it's brakes when it gets beside me (I saw GTP) and then punches it. I put it in 1st instantly (see guys I am learning) and punch it. I scratched just a little and immediately jumped his azz, slammed into 2nd at 40 something, and scratched big time, the tail of my car sliding into his lane! I let off the gas just a tad and my car gripped and left his azz in the dust, I mean no contest. Now my car may have scared him when it tried to "slap" his car and he may have hit his brakes, I don't know, but he was waaaay back there. I shut her down at around 70 and then he came flying by (sounded like he was WOT) and went on down the road. I looked over at my girl, she had not made a sound the entire time, she had a death grip on the "oh chit" handle on the passenger side. Now she is boycotting my car for a few days.

What is the highest speed I should ever downshift to 1st in? I thought anything under 40 was fine for 1st? Don't wanna tear nothin' up . Chit, I don't think I revved it too bad, I kind of shift based on the noise of the engine, I try to watch the road more than the tach, I am still learning.

If it was not revving too high its okay I am just always a little more cautious. I cannot afford loud exhaust let alone a new tranny. I am an auto though. I wish I was an M6. I have driven quite a few M6's though. Just though that was cutting it close. I mean you have to row from down to up really fast. Main reason I said it was because you said you were LRN'ing. A lot of these guys are amazing driving old farts who know their cars like a fat man knows a candy bar. If you can do it that is okay. I just do not want you to feel pressured to push it to hard and break it. I hate when that happens to folks I know.

Try posting this in "New LS1 Enthusiasts" forum.
Everyone will pretty much tell you that step 1 would be ripping the Flowmaster off and replacing it with a catback that flows well.
Anyhow, Nittos, Cutout (if you plan on keeping the Flowmaster), gears, cam...... the list is very long.

.
I was wondering this when I read the story ... so I tried it on my way home from school today ....

Rolling at < 20 mph, car goes into first ... going faster then 20mph, first gear lock takes over and doesn't allow you to get into it ..... so how did you manage to get your car into 1st at 40mph? Plus, it should be SCREAMING at that speed.
Granted I have 4.10's, but still ...

Idk about F-bodies, but if you rev the engine it'll allow it to enter 1st at a higher speed. Maybe that's obvious, maybe ya'll are taking that into account, I'm a newb! [flame suit on]

Take your flame suit off buddy ... You only have to strap that on when you act like bullitt ... not when you try to add to a conversation.

I had it reving ... thats why it let me in at 20 ... without the reving it is actually alittle lower, probably around 15 as phenis said.
