98 z28 vs cobalt ss
Hey I'm a new member and my first post. My 98 z28 t56 is mostly stock other then the free ram air mod k&n air filter and flowmaster muffler. I plan on racing my friends cobalt ss at Cecil raceway tomorrow and was wondering are cobalts really as fast as people say he talks allot of **** saying his would do 12s typical ricer that never ran it at the track. Is this going to be a close race? Btw I really dislike cobalts

Talk to Juice, he will inform you on slobalts.
If you are at the track you should have him as long as you get a good launch and can shift worth a damn. Cobalts put up a better fight from a roll. Wrong section btw. You new?

For future reference, post all "who will win/what will it dyno/what will I run" threads in this section: https://ls1tech.com/forums/dyno-bench-racing-forum-150/. I'm sure a mod will move this one over for you.
As for the cobalt, is it a supercharged one or turbocharged? The turbo ones are completely different animals and can be a handful from a roll, from but have trouble leaving at the track. A local guy is into the 12s on the stock turbo...12.7s before he sprayed it I think. Blower ones can be quick, but it takes a lot more mods.

I'm not sure if it's supercharged or turbo charged he took me for a ride in it once didn't hear a blow off valve or a super charger sound hard to tell. It's probably turbo is my guess he says it's faster then his old ss. Any tips for the track thou don't know if I should run 100 octain or just 93 or run with traction control on or off

You won't see a big gain, if anything at all, from running a higher octane on a stock car. You aren't even tuned for it, so there definitely won't be anything more than MAYBE 3hp tops.
Obviously you want to run with the traction off, do you want to bog with it on?
I assume this is your first time to the track?

Run normal fuel for you. 100 Octane will net you nothing but problems without a tune for it. Traction control should be off and you better start practicing your launches. Avoid the waterbox. There are some good threads on lanches around here. If you don't blow the tires off or miss a gear, you should be good.
Any clue what he has for mods? If he is truly in the 12s you could be in trouble.

Here's was I did, I ran on 245 street tires:
Since Gateway makes it impossible to miss the waterbox, I went through it and gave a little spin of the tires. No need for a burnout on street tires.
Slip the clutch, DO NOT DUMP IT! If you dump it, have fun running a 14 and looking like a moron. You are better off leaving off idle than dumping it.
Definitely get some practice launching. Try to find some flat ground to practice launching on. What you want to do is get about ~2500rpms and hold the car steady (so you won't trip a red light)...obviously this isn't going to work on an incline, hence why I said flat ground. You want to let the clutch out just enough so you can get some rpm, but not move. Then when you go, ride the clutch like you would if you were a noob going up a big hill so you don't spin big time.
First pass, I'd say leave off idle just so you can get one under your belt. Second pass, do what I mentioned. After that, try a mix different things and see what works for you.
Here's my best pass in the old car. Notice I didn't do a burnout since I was on street tires, just cleaning them off and getting the water off.

I think I was leaving at like ~4k rpm that night.

I found that I was getting the best traction around 2000 rpms n letting the clutch out as slow as the tires gripped but I'm sure the track is usually less grippy
