Default Puppy kicking: Mk5 VW GTI

I was driving to work tonight, and pulled up behind a metallic gray Mk5 GTI. It's a car I've seen around town before, lightly modded, nothing special. We got out to the highway, and he took off. I chased him down and pulled even with him. He signaled that he wanted to race, so I downshifted to 3rd @ 55 MPH. As soon as I downshifted, he took off. WTF...why doesn't anybody know the "rules" of racing?

He had jumped out about a car length when I floored it. I immediately stopped his pull, caught up with him, then passed him at the end of 3rd around 80 MPH. I shifted to 4th, and almost immediately put a car length on him. I shut it down around 100 MPH, since there was no point in continuing.

He pulled even with me again and we gave each other the thumbs-up. I told him we'd go again, 3 honks this time. I downshifted back to 3rd, gave the 3 honks, and walked him hard. I put 3-4 car lengths on him by the end of 3rd, shifted to 4th and put a couple more on him before I shut it down. He was cool about it, which is rare since most people in this area try the ricer fly-by after they get beat.

Nice cars but mind numbingly slow.

Drove a mk6 APR chip stock everything and it was hella fun. Probably a low 100 trap car.

I had an 01 mk4 with tune, big fmic, intake, Downpipe, full exhaust, short throw, blah blah blah, it was running 20 psi on the stock turbo and it would spin the front tires at 60 but as for speed it was slow, but really fun to drive

had the same chance on the way home tonight. it was one of those GTI R32s that sounded like it had exhaust. he wanted to play, but I refused to kick the puppy around.

wasn't worth messing around in traffic just to beat him senseless

A friend of mine has a tuned Mk5, forget which company he got it from. He's supposedly putting down ~250HP and ~300 lb.ft. of torque. The car feels decently quick. I've been wanting to race him for a while, since he never shuts up about his car.

What gear ratio are you running to only get 80mph at the top of third, I have 410s in my car and the top of third for is about 110mph @ 6800rpm. Just curious.

Both of ya are wrong. At 6000 in 3rd with a stock size tire you should be goin around 86mph....check this sight http://www.f-body.org/gears/

I only glanced down briefly at the speedometer at the end of 3rd, I wasn't paying 100% attention to it. HioSSilver is right, top speed in 3rd with 4.10s @ 6000 RPM is 85 MPH.

Funny with a 295/50 on a 17" 99WS6 rim the calculator says my top of 3rd @ 6800 rpms my rev limiter is 109mph. Didn't realize a 16" rim made that much of a difference. I didnt tell skorpion 317 he was wrong just asked what gear he had because it seemed to me bigger than my 410 to clear things up. I also dont think his rims are 16s either nice rims though one of my favorites for the T/A's on the market

did'nt know you were goin to 6800 or what size tire you were running. The rim size does'nt matter, just tire hieght. With all that power can you get threw the 1/4 with 4.10's? I could'nt, I had to change to 3.90's to keep it off the rev limit to get threw the traps.

I am thinking of going to 3.73 because I am having to shift to 4th right before the traps going through around 122-126mph with my old setup. I think lossing the 3 to 4 shift will get me a few more tenths. I am going to make the final call once I test my new setup (switching to front mounted turbo and putting on some more boost.) Who knows with more power I may be able to get into 4th sooner and actually use it. Right now it feels like I am just bearly able to pin before its over.

Not trying to steal the thread, but a guy on my ship has a mk5 with, i believe, stock turbo, ic, bigger exhaust manifold and full 3" exhaust with a "stage 2 tune". I should be racing him this week or next. I will post up a video of it. He is pushing about 250-270FWhp..

BTW Good kill OP

I raced one of those that appeared to be lowered on a onramp to the interstate: he tried to hang on my bumper thru the downhill declining radius turn but ended up sliding off almost into the dirt then BARELY recovering. I love my Star Spec grippy *** tires! That makes it 2 Sti's and a R32 that tried hangin with me in turns and lost it.
