Basically stock 98' TA auto vs. New 5.0
So this isn't a "kill" story persay. My car is bone stock besides 3300 stall and shift kit. Haven't really tried to race anything lately because my rear is on it's way out. Raced an exhaust only 5.0 manual from about a 30-40mph roll. I didn't even bother to hand shift was just messing around. We were pretty much even till about 75 maybe him by a headlight. We both let off around 120 and he had about two and a half cars. Was a really cool older gentleman. I expected him to win by more, maybe he wasn't too great at shifting. Opinions?

I'm guessing he couldn't shift because he should have beaten you a lot worse then that. Good death.

If he was bone stock, or just a muffler swap modded I can see the results being exactly like that. However, if he actually had a full exhaust (which means headers) then he also had a tune, and his tune/full exhaust will trump any stall converter you could ever hope to put in your car. Nice runs btw! Getting a new 5.0 to run isn't actually that easy.... at least in my car: the second they realize all that noise and rumpety rumping is coming from my GTO they practically fall over themselves to not look me in the eyes lest I challenge them to a race.

if all he had was an axle back i could see that being a good race how you describe because the stall will knock .5 secs off your et and that puts you in the realm of a stock or very light modded 5.0 so good runs op! if he was an auto I bet you would have put lengths on him lol

I think people underestimate how well stalls do from rolls because of how nasty they are from a stand still.
A good stalls makes a big difference from a roll. It eliminates all dead zones and the shift extensions always keep you in your powerband.

I used to have a TCI 3500 stall with a 4700 shift extension. I still felt the 32-50 mph dead spot although I admit it was much improved. My trap speed also went from 106 to 108 due to the shift extenstion.
Even still you are talking about his trap going from probably 102 to 104. And his dead spot improved but not eliminated. My advice to EVERYONE with an LS1 is get a bare minimum of 3800 rpm stall. Any less just leaves you wanting more

case in point: i raced my wife (car in sig) numerous times. lid and muffler only 99 m6 car. from <30 my auto car would jump out maybe a fender, but the m6 car was at my door until 3rd gear then it would slowly start creeping on me. the m6 ta trapped 108-109 at the track to my 111 a4 car and pulled it every time on the street. if we raced from anything over 60 all i saw was the black car creeping away.
from a 40 roll, his car is stock, regardless of how big the stall speed is. every once in awhile you'll see where a quality stall increased the trap speed a couple mph, but i haven't seen too much of that. my car trapped like .5 less with the stock stall.
