Default Highway shenanigans with a G8 GT

Was out doing some logging to build a new tune and I spotted a 05-09 GT500 convertible on the highway so I was trying to pester him into playing a little...

In the process I passed a dark gray metallic G8 GT who wanted to play instead. I could tell it was a manual but nothing else since my car is fairly loud and the windows were up.

He wouldn't ever line up just cat and mouse through traffic, until we got a clear spot. We were doing 75-80mph and I was just about to get next to him and try to get him to slow down for some honks but instead he nailed it. I was hoping he was just goosing the throttle so I didn't even go WOT right away.

Once I saw he wasn't going to let off I nailed it. 80mph rolls with a rich WOT tune and pulled timing are sooo awesome

I stopped his pull instantly and then once I finally got into the cams real powerband started pulling. I had covered a ~1.5 car catchup and was starting to pull even harder when I saw cars in front of us. We were running around 115mph or so looking at my EFI live log and there was a van in my lane so I lifted and got on the brakes.

He kept on going so we didn't get to line up again for a real race. I was impressed with how slow my pull started out, I was thinking I would run away from him.

Shitty run but it's the first bit of fun I've got with the new heads/cam. I think my tune is about lined out so I'm hoping the weather is good for a trip to the 1/4 tomorrow where I can try some more timing adjustments.

If it was a manual it was a GXP, not a GT. Good kill though for sure!

yep had to be a GXP with the LS3: those things are honestly badass looking and from my experience a bit faster then a new SS 6spd.

Do the automatics have some manual shift options then? Because am fairly certain the car had GT badges. The jerky motions made me think it was a manual.

And to correct the confusion, I closed the gap and was about to pull past but had to slow for traffic, I didn't actually pass him or put cars on him.

Like I said I was expecting to go around him a lot quicker. Maybe the new tune will help some more. It was fairly rich (11.5:1) and I haven't bumped the timing back up yet, IIRC it's set to 24*.

I like those cars a lot, really wish he would have slowed down for a real race.

I believe it was a slap shift thing they had when I test drove them. 90's era cumbersome thing.

They have your normal drive, sport mode which shifts its self still but a little more aggressive. Then they have manual mode. Which you have to shift or it will red line. The manual will let you hold the rpms in each gear a lot better then sport or regular mode. If it was a GXP they have went high 12's stock. GT's fastest stock time time is 13.3 or 13.4.

Oh also when tuning the tranny. You can tune the regular driving mode to shift at XXXX rpms, sport mode to shift at XXXX from regular and manual to shift at XXXX. This works great when running nitrous. I had my sport mode set to shift for the nitrous and the manual and regular for N/A.

sport mode just holds gears longer after going wot before dropping down. it doesnt change shift times or pressure. would be nice if we knew the mods or lack there of with the g8 gt. sadly if it was a g8 gt and you seen jerking he was probly hitting red lines trying to shift manually

Yeah I'm curious as well.

I don't have any real reason to think it was modded, but I would hope my car would pull harder on the highway against a low 13 second car. Should have at least had my g/f drop a window to listen. My car got a lot louder inside when I chopped off the tails. IT had dark tint but no performance parts decals or anything. Very clean car.

Around 3700 with me in it, I had my g/f too so just over 3800.

It ran 12.2s with the old cam and stock heads, and that was with bad lobes on the cam and valve float.

It definitely feels a lot stronger now. Guess it will be February until I make it back to the track.

That why said depends if tuned. If tuned you can set up sport mode, manual all different. Not tuned then you are correct.

Ohio: guess you would be glad to hear the guy who traded for my brother's old POS broken trans 5.0 got it fixed.

With a mail order 93 tune, Air Raid cai, and drag radials it went 11.87. On slicks it supposedly went 11.48@115mph. Not sure the DA but it was very cool out. He didn't say what 60ft.
