Post Racing at the local drag strip tommorrow Notchback foxbody vs 02' Z28 read inside!

Alright tomorrow I may be running my 2002 Camaro z28 55k miles lots of bolt ons 6 speed, 10 bolt rear on new 295 wide performance summer tires.

American racing 1 7/8 long tube headers
American racing 3in ORY
flowmaster 3in catback
G5X4 cam
Street tune by HP tuners
comp dual .650 lift valve springs
chromeoly hardened push rods
ls7 lifters
green top 42lb injectors
ls6 intake
85mm maf
smoothe bellow
slp lid
k&n filter
tick performance master cylinder
monster lvl 4 clutch and fly wheel
custom steel drive shaft
weld in sub frame connectors
eibach sportline lowering springs

Also my car was run by the previous owner, ran only a 13.0 at 116mph with a 2.5 60' and completely bald tires and a open Y pipe. driver skill unknown. but I know it can do better than a 13.0.

and the notchback

running street tires as well, T5 5 speed, has suspension but its set up for a slick. hasnt run the car on 100% street tires ever yet.

Trickflow 61cc heads. trickflow intake, shorty headers, to bassani cat back, its basically a top end kit, stock original bottom end. made 312hp or so to the wheels, weight of the car is around 2700 pounds,

car runs 11.8's with drag radials, but he's never run it on street tires.

so what do you think?

116 is pretty healthy. Can you drive? You'll probably not manage better than mid to high 12s I'd say personally if you haven't had seat time in the car on street tires.

Every track is different, and it's not just the atmospheric pressure, air temperature or relative humidity that make each track unique. Some just run faster and some slower. Some are 'fast' enough to make it a good assumption they fool with there equipment to get guys to show up to get there hero run slips. With that being said you should be in the 11.8-12.2 range IF your drivers skill, suspension, and tires can handle the task. Don't be surprised nor let down if you run mid 12's as there is more mid/low 12 second "cam only" fbodies running around then there are 11 second ones.

Far as the mustang goes, with those cars it's all about the 60' and 1/8 mile times. Him not being on drag slicks/radials is gonna most likely hurt him and should make it a close chase race with you coming around him hard 1300 feet down the track.

My first time a few weeks ago and my first run, ran a 12.4 @121 mph on street tires and my crap 10 bolt. You'll get it down. Takes a lot of practice to get the launches down and also slicks help out so much. With that cam I can see a mid 11 second car. I think the previous owner sold the car because he couldn't drive it

I'm hoping i can take off well enough, its going to be a cold night, and I'm on performance summer tires. but the sticky glue should help. I have to get used to the clutch and where the rpms should be at when i let it out. I ususally let it out at a normal pace not just let it fly. I just am afraid that since ls1's dont pull that hard off the line I'm lost haha, but this car RIPS up top

Alright well it took a bit to get used to the clutch and how to "launch" on street tires, and boy did it spin no matter what lol.

he ran a 12.66 at 115 mph on street tires, with a 1.99 60' after his second pass of the night, I ran a 13.3 at 106mph lol he barely spun too.

but as i got better the best I could manage with a 2.22 60' was a 12.81 at 114mph, and i spun through first and a lot of 2nd gear, couldnt help it! this car gets up and goes though, he's had his car a lot longer than me so he was used to it.

also I tried "no lift" shifting, and boy that got scary haha, i got sideways when i slammed 2nd so that was no good! so i gave up that option.

All in all I'm satisfied with 12.8, i know its got a LOT more in it, just need a sticky tire and a better rear first. I really wanted to hit 12.5 but it seems hard with street tires haha. but there was also a 5th gen running 13.01 so I beat his time too haha.

Now that your cherry is popped, you gotta get out there and go again. Practice DOES pay off! And once you've been there (track), going back makes you a veteran who can hand out limited but very fresh advice to the never ending hoards of new guys to the track.

For the record though, if the best you could muster was a 2.22 60' time I really gotta question your tire selection. Stock craptastic tires launched properly will get you between 1.9 - 2.2 60' time depending on track prep and temp. Legit 295 series "performance summer tires" should have a rookie like you in the 1.8-2.0 range all night, with 1.6-1.7 possible from a veteran. And yes, on the stock 10 bolt. I'm not a 4th gen fbody guy, but I do know that there is some definite rear suspension weaknesses on them that need to be addressed even when at stock power but definitely when modded up like yours is.

What tire do you have on the back? You got me wondering when you state all your engine mods specifically but only vaguely state your tire info.

I'm running new bf Goodrich T/A KDW 2s. All they did was spin, it was a cold night though probably around 42 degrees, the tires were warm, but when it's hot out they hook dead on the street. They aren't really rates for cold temps now that I mention the temperature.

KDW's are not any kind of serious performance tire. Hell, when they came out back in 2002 they weren't even the best available summer tire. Now they are two new categories of tire above them (max performance and extreme performance) and probably not even as good as a average high performance all season tire on a sporty SUV. At your power level you should be working with the usual suspects in the extreme performance category: Dunlop Direzza ZII, Direzza Star Spec, Goodrich Gforce Rival, Bridgestone RE-11, Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 R (say that 3 times fast), or step down to a slew of other tires in the max performance category led by the world renowned Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

Far as in the cold, Tire Rack and various magazines have proven that max performance summer tires work better in the rain than traditional all season tires, and can even match up against the best high performance all season tires in the colder 35-50 degree range. Below freezing is a different story...

yeah I knew i was in trouble anyway based off of having a cam only ls1 on street tires, and hearing the kid before me ran only 13.0 at 115. with a 2.5 60' I'll try again on a warmer night hopefully I'll hit 12.5 or maybe less if i can, gotta get my 60' down!
