Default LS1 vs BMW M5

I'm on I-20 going to work this morning, and I cruise up behing this silver M5. We were both in the fast lane, and as I changed lanes to cruise by on his right, I could see he was speeding up, and that I would be unable to pass because of upcoming traffic in my lane, I dropped her into fourth gear and gave the throttle a nice punch. That's all it took, he punched it and we were off, all the way through fourth gear and into fifth all the way up to 135mph, I didn't pull an inch on him and he didn't pull an inch on me, it was one of the best races I've ever had (they're few and far between around here) I exited soon after so we only got to make the one run. When I got to work I checked up on the M5- it seems I raced a 4 door sedan with a big cobra mustang motor, they have very similar performance #'s to the stock LS1 camaro (0-60-4.8sec. 13.3 1/4 mile)with a 5.0ltr DOHC V8. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

You had almost 50 cubic inches on him, what are you talking about big? And a cobra motor? I dont see any factory mustangs making 400hp N/A... Please don't insult the M5 by comparing it to a mustang. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Other than that, good race. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Yeah, it is a 4.9L DOHC 4V with Variable valve timing. 39x HP and 36x torque. I have seen magazines pilot them into the 12s bone stock before .Kick *** for a 4000lb 4 door. Good run

What I meant by a big cobra motor was : it's the same type motor, (DOHC V8) only bigger (5.0liters vs the cobra's 4.6liters), and as for me having a few cubes on him, what about the extra exhaust and intake valve the M5 has in each cylinder, and the the extra cam up top, I think everything weighs out to them being two very well matched setups (the LS1 when compared to the BMW M5 DOHC V8)

Congrats on a close run, but I'd expect that against an M5 unless your car is modified (in the least).
What magazine puts a 394hp car that weighs somewhere in the vicinity of 4,000 lb. in the 12's on a 1/4 mile track? That ain't gonna happen when it's stock and I don't care where it's raced! They do run 13's.

I toyed with one once on the way to the racetrack. It was known to be modified and had a big name around town for being fast and he was trying to race everything on the road. I crushed it without concern, just BECAUSE I'd heard about it(I'm no street racer), since we were on the highway, doing about 60mph. Even modified, that car would've impressed me if it'd run 12's. He elected to watch that night. He probably thought something was wrong with his car after the whoopin' I gave him. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Well, it seems like an awful good excuse to spend some money on the SS. I think I am going to put a cam in her next, along with full exhaust. Thanks for all the comments <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

I will be the first to admit that the BMW M5 is one AMAZING piece of machinery. My good buddy has a special order Estoril Blue 03 M5 with sport package (black with silverstone inserts - looks awesome). My SS has a couple very slight bolt-ons. We ran one day, I was behind my buddy and he hit it. I saw a cloud of black smoke shoot out of the pipes as the *** sunk into the pavement and took off. I followed suite and held about 1 to 2 cars lengths back. As we approached 90 -100 mph that's when his extra hp seemed to shine. He slowly inched away from me at that point. I don't care what anyone says about any other BMW, but do not mess with the Motorsport Division.

Why not a LT1 Impala on a 18's or 20's w/ a stroker and the works? That'll be well under the 6 digit price tag the Beamer has!!

Yes that is true, but in the end you are still comparing a BMW aka "The Ultimate Driving Machine" and a Chevrolet. I love both and if you saw my other post then you will realize that I am the kind of guy that strongly believes in keeping a car stock.

The M5s top end advantage over the LS1 comes from gearing. 5th gear in the M5 is the 1:1 and 6th is their only over drive. Where on the LS1 4th is the 1:1 and 5th and 6th are overdrive.

I met this acquaintance at a Autobahn restop. We would stop and meet there have our coffee before wehead out to work. It became a ritual to haul *** out of there till we hit our respective exits. Well it was always neck in neck ,sometimes I would pull away and sometimes he would have the advantage.
Then went in the Hot CAm and exhaust . I never had a problem putting distance on him from then on. Word has gotten around that if you want alittle addrenalin rush with your coffee this is the place to stop on your way to work.
Best regards

Those M5's and M3's are really nice cars. The fit and finish on these cars are really nice (hence, the price!!!) However, they aren't into the straight line acceleration that our cars are better at- but they do perform well at that.

All in all, I still am keeping my Z!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

MSRP on a new M5 is only a little more then a new Z06 (and markup for these cars usually runs in the 5-10k range). BMW of Houston North has a couple of M5s for sale in the 50-55k range. Plus, I've seen a couple 2001 M5s go for as little as 45k... I'd rather have the Z06 though. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
