Maximum Top Speed
I hope that I'm posting this in the appropriate section! A discussion the other day resulted in some different opinions, what do you guys say? Is it possible to achieve maximum top speed in overdrive gears, or would you have to maintain at least a 1.1 ratio? An A4 for example: Would top speed be achieved in 3rd, [or 4th od]? 6 speed: In 4th, or [5th or 6th od's]? Please tell me what you think so this matter can be resolved!

Re: Maximum Top Speed
My C5 six-speed will hit top speed in 5th gear with the the factory stock 3.42 rear-end. I now have 4.10 gears and the new top-speed gear is actually 6th. I've done 174mph before I lifted with the stock gears in 5th gear. I've since done 170mph indicated on the HUD in 6th gear with the 4.10 rear-end. The rpm's were between 4000 and 4500 (couldn't get a good look). It was pretty fun.

Re: Maximum Top Speed
Top speed on my 01" 161mph my friends 96" corvette collector ed. is 181mph. We have tested both. Howerver I think horsepower is what matters as horsepower is what keeps the car moving and a roll and torque moves you from a stop. Or something like that?? Now of corse I have to beat my friends top speed.....

I hit the rev limiter in 5th (6800) with the HUD saying 182mph. I don't know how acurate the HUD was, but I magine it's within a couple of mph. I shifted to 6th and the car would pull no more. It actually slowed down.

Even shifting at 6500 rpms with 3.42s I can only go ~136 in 4th gear. 5th gear is the top speed gear for 3.42s, not 4th. Hell even if you dropped down to 2.73 gears in a M6 you STILL couldn't hit 150 in 4th.
