Default What's wrong with the younger generation?

<Rant On>

Maybe you guys can explain it to me 'cuz I don't get it. Today at the track a young kid 18-20 had a turbo Civic with all the goodies. It had a carbon fiber hood, race seats, etc. It was ugly as hell too. The funny thing is that everyone was talking about how fast it was. I guess it ran a 13.6. Since when is that fast? Sure, it's respectable for a Civic...but fast? I can't even imagine how much money he dumped into that POS. It's just not worth it. I'm not trying to be holier than thou, but WTF?

I do have to give the kid credit because his car wasn't all riced out (no body kit or huge wing).

Another kid in an S10 I believe, not sure, ran a 14.9 and kept telling my how he beat a WS6 and blows by people like they're standing still.

I am aware that my 12.2 @ 117mph isn't fast, respectable...but not fast.

<Rant Off>

I hate it when people are in denial and think that their slow s&*t is the greatest thing in the world. Sure those are respectable times for those cars(civic and S-10), but they certainly couldn't take an LS1. For Christ's sake, even a stock LT1 could take that truck!
Some people are just morons, I just try to ignore them or destroy them

Civic turbo's can be pretty mean! Local guy has a turbo hatch that made 542whp!

Sure, there are some turbo civics that can be nasty. I'm not denying that. The issue here is that kids today actually believe they have fast rides when they don't.

BTW, sorry mods...I meant for this to be in the lounge.

The reason the Civic didn't have a wing and ground effects is because he ran out of money after the hood and racing seats. I'm part of the younger generation being 19 myself and I have to say I hate my generation. I hate the time I live in and wish I was driving a 1966 SS396 Chevelle unfortunately the glory days of the muscle car have all but died. I grew up with all these idiots that think their hondas are the $h!t and believe me I am more tired of hearing it than anyone. What hurts even more is the import thing has not only taken over my generation but everone elses as well. It's more a disease than means of performance. Most all infected with it lose sight of reality. They see flashing light and "pretty" colors that their acid tripped minds think is a symbol for speed and they start drooling. The worst part of it all is they can't see the economic nightmare they are creating. While the creators of this "Phenom", that is the ricer world, sit in their cushy dojos sipping their herbal tea the American car industry hurts. What makes me cry is the fact that rather than fight the urge American car companies have begun to jump on the bandwagon producing hideous creations to match that of their Asian counterparts. No longer does speed have anything to do with horsepower it now has to do with how many stickers you can fit on your carbon fiber hood. I respect efficiency but I respect tradition and muscle more than anything and I am livid with the approach my generation has taken. I appologize for their foolish actions and ignorant ways. They know not what they do wrong. This is an extremely sad turn of events and I fear that the world has gone down the craphole thanks to "my generation". They claim it was gas prices that killed the muscle car I say it was ignorance. Sorry for ranting and thanx for the time if ya read it.

Nope, the problem is the ignorance of the ricer crowd. I wasn't trying to generalize by saying all 18-20 are clueless. I meant only the ricers. I won't even group the import people into that category because there are many knowledgable import racers with very fast cars. It's more a matter of intelligence (or lack there-of) than age. This board is filled with knowledgable 18-20 year olds with fast rides.

I don't want to defend the ricer crowd too much, but they're part of my generation and a lot of what's going on is a combination of ignorance and denial.

Those of us that grew up in the eighties and nineties didn't have the exposure to the fire-breathing drag strip monsters of the sixties and seventies. A lot of these kids have never been in a car that will run a fourteen second quarter, much less a truly fast street car. Hell, the fastest car I've ever driven is still an '02 Z06. Lack of frame of reference is the ignorance part - think how fast a Z28 would feel feel if you spent five years of college/co-op driving a 2.8L S10 Blazer.

Denial is something I don't understand, but it's still there. I guess some people believe the excuses that are spouted on just about any car forum to make their cars seem faster than they really are. I was getting some laughs at clubRSX.com yesterday, and someone said in no uncertain terms that once a race goes above 115mph, no car in the world will pull on an RSX-S.

As for why these guys end up in Civics and S10's when they're interested in drag racing, don't discount insurance costs. My wife and I make pretty good money for 24 year-olds and we were only comfortable dropping the cash on a Z28 last year knowing we could hack the $1800/year in insurance for one year until we turned 25.

Just let them live in denial/ignorance. Who cares what they say, because you know deep down inside someone who's running a 14 second quarter knows he'll get destroyed by you.

Good post Caswell. I guess I feel more sorry for them than bothered by it. They see 9 and 10 sec cars at the track, yet they still don't get the picture.

Maybe it's just me. My friend has a 7 second Mustang so to him a 10 second car would be slow...frame of reference like you said Caswell.

im 19 and i enjoy making fun of ricers. it brightens my day when i see a particularly over the top ricer and i can just chuckle to myself. ive run into some fast hondas, a bone stock looking turbo si gave me a nice run but other than that the rice crowd stays away from me, no revs nothing. even driving around on drag radials with numbers on the window from the track wont even get any interest from the rice crowd.

btw, 1800 a year insurance? what plan is that on? mine is 3400 a year for full coverage from allstate.

Don't feel down and upset with rice talk. Let's see why they seem to go fast in their stupid
minds:
1. they weigh less than a F-body
2. they put the "coffee can" on so it sounds like an even louder sewing machine
3. they use *** ugly cold injection
4. all that neon in + out is quick too
5. the over-sized baby buggy wheels w/o proper alignment
6. over sized wings and spoilers that actually slow them down more than anything
7. their stereo's actually push them along
8. sitting on the floor tinking it's a low rider
9. wearing your hat 45 deg. to the left speeds you up as well
10. if you spoke Honda, you'd think your fast too
11. white and thinking you are jap helps
12. ching-chang-chong-ding-ding (sound of engine after 1 run ---------
PRICELESS!

There is hope. My friends younger brother is 20, and he thinks a 1969 GTO Judge is the coolest car ever. My brother is 21 and loves the SS. The good ones are out there. Pop culture just popularizes the ricer.

Its all about the media. Fast and furious was the start of it. For example, a couple weeks ago I was watching Monster garage where they turn the rx-7 into a dune buggy. Well during the episode of building the car, they showed one of the guys installing nitrous into the car. In the end of the show when they race it, they don't show jesse james blowing any go-go juice. Then about 5 minutes later a kid from down the hall comes into my dorm room and says, "Man I'm pissed....they didn't blow the NAWZZZZ" I just shook my head in disgust.

A fair amount of the import crowd folks realize their rides are not that fast, but some of them just like to make cars look all souped up.

I think there is a middle ground between appearance and performance, and I hope we can find it over the next 2-3 years.

I'm only 21 and I'm unfortunately stuck in this same BS. Nothing but ricers here. I drive an OK daily driver car, I just can't afford to have an LS1 f-body like Iwant right now. I don't think this was meant to generalize the 18-20+ age group as being ricers. Its just a lot more feasible for a lot of people to have a cheap econo box and soup it up. I've left my car stock simply because I don't see the $$$ in modding it for speed. Though it's still faster than quite a few modded hondas around here

Another reason that I think the ricers almost always overestimate the quickness of their cars are due to the mods that they choose. Lower your car, put on rubber- band tires, sit on a rock- hard race seat, and add a fart can exhaust. Every bump will rattle your fillings, and every you pull away from a stop sign the cabin is filled with noise- you have the illusion of speed. And unfortunately folks, that seems to be the main thrust of the ricer movement- the illusion of speed.

It's really too bad 'cause some of these kids are really talented, but they just don't know any better. I was tuning in to TNN a couple of months ago to watch the Sunday automotive programming when some import show came on. Some of these guys did some tremendous body & detailing work (although it was gaudy and tasteless in my opinion, but seemed to have excellent craftsmanship). After seeing one Nissan with a ton of mods I felt like yelling at the screen- BUT YOU STILL HAVE 16 SECOND NISSAN!!

All we can do is try to educate these kids and at the least they may learn to apprecieate what a truly fast car is. There's a kid at my work that is always yapping about how a Honda makes more HP/litre than an LS1, and quotes Consumer Reports about how superior Japanese cars are etc, etc. After I completed the Cam,header, converter, and exhaust on my '99 Z28 I took him for a ride- all he could say was "holy ****....holy ****!" He may not ever buy an American car- but at least he stopped with his Import superiority trip.
