Hey guys my buddy has a 1998 Ls1 Trans Am with:
hooker cat back
k&n air filter
smooth bellows
He will be racing a 1989 5.0 convertible mustang with the 302:
exhaust
ignition
intake
Will the LS1 kill him or will it be close?

gonna be ugly. when i used to race my GTP(lots of boost, cam and nitrous) i would also drive the LS1 out(when it was stock). they woudlnt race the GTP , but all of them would race a "stock" LS1....and i dont think i EVER lost. The special of the day was always bolt on 5.slows

well, we always knew i would lose the the L from a dig, but from a roll...and i also lost to that TT Cobra that night too....

I have no sound clips, sorry, it has a pretty good lope to it, Idle after it warms up and is left alone is around 750-800 and sounds much sicker than stock, a lot of the time with the AC on it idles around 900 and the cam is a little harder to hear. All in all, it sounds pretty good to me. nothing too radical, but more of a braapbraapbraapbraap when it sits there idling. Oh well, when I had my LT1 everyone wouldrun me, now, its hard as hell to find ppl willing to race it
Most people are scared of a clean 5.0 with new paint, cowl hood, and a cammed sound, i know the car isnt THAT fast, but ppl are scared of it i think. One time coming out of my apt. complex one night (university apartments at LSUS) my gf said she saw a guy passing us in the parking lot stare at my car and mouth "DAMN!!!". Lol, its a fun car. Not a cammed ls1 or anything though

hey guys, im the guy who raced that 89 5.0... hes been talking crap all day and my buddy made this topic for me just to make positive that i would kill him, i pretty much knew that i could take him, but when you have ALL day to think about this race it starts to get to you... untill i pulled 4 cars on him lol... he had no chance, from a dig and a roll, hopefully that shut him up, he has to be the cockiest 5.0 owner ive ever seen, he says he walks t/a's and camaros all day lol. dont worry guys, i put him in his place, and made sure of it.

Well...weak is relative. I agree, stock tghey arent special, but with just gears and exhaust/CAI/pullies my friend pretty well kept up with my 95 TA. I beat him, but it wasnt anything i would brag about. But yeah, stock LS1 kills them, badly.

Check out the mustangs=no top end thread. My buddy has a pretty nice modded 89 gt. We raced a ls1 with lid, long tubes, and a loudmouth. He only had around 2 cars on it at 120mph. I mean the ls1 isnt stock but its kinda close compared to what work my buddy has done. I would say ls1 all the way in your case though.

HMMM.....lets keep one thing in mind here the 5.(slows)some of you guys call them...was kicking the **** out of 90% of F-bodys around the same years...and with little work can still beat them. The LS1 is by far a superior engine....and the technology gap is quite large...so racing a bolt LS1 with a Bolt on 5.0 is about same as a bolt on LS1 with a bolt on LS7...this in mind that guy in the 89 mustang OBVIOUSLY has no clue what the LS1's can do...Sorry if i offended anyone I just get irritated when the 5.0s and Grand Nationals dont get the respect they deserve...these cars BEGUN the fuel injected performance revolution.
