Default Stripper Z-28 vs. SRT-4

I was on the interstate driving to a buddies house sunday night when I noticed a red SRT-4 a few cars ahead of me. I began to catch up with him and as I pulled up next to him I noticed him peeking out of the corner of his eye . I reved it up a little bit. I think he did the same, but I couldn't hear it. All the sudden without honking or anything he just took off trying to get a jump on me. He managed to get a full car length ahead of me before I floored it. Oh, race was from 55mph. By the end of third gear I had already passed him and fourth gear pulled on him for about 3-4 cars at 115 where I let off. After all the excitement, I slowed down because of a regular police hideout. As I slowed, I could tell he was catching up and thought mabie he was coming back for seconds. As he drove by, he turned his dome light on and gave me a thumbs up!! I was surprised; he has been the only driver I have ever beaten that was a good sport.

A Z28 with NO OPTIONS WHAT SO EVER. Well, the girls around here suck, but at least the car/bike owners i race/beat/lose to ALWAYS give a thumbs up or something positive.

a Z that made the wrong choices in life....j/k it's a Z with no options that of course is lighter than a fully loaded Z, i've heard of some stripper's running a 12.8 1/4 out of the box, but who knows

interesting. i find it hard to believe that a stock car lacking a few options over another stock car would run a full half second quicker. but, theres also the "factory freak" theory. just my .02 sense. good info. thanks guys.

Makes all the difference in the world. A 12.8 is completely believable. There are some not-so-stripped down Z's and T/A's that have run high 12's stock. Not very often, but it has happened.

Mine ran a 13.2 @106 w/street tires, and it spun off the line, if I ran slicks, It would have been in the 12s. I did have a loudmouth and lid, but other ls1's there with full exhausts and engine mods werent running that. Mine has a 273 gear, whichs pulls hard on top end.

thats more what i would agree with. plus, i didnt say that a stock ls1 is not capable of 12's. i just dont think that just because of the simple fact that a car is a "stripper", would mean that it would be that much faster than a Z with a few options. its kinda like the thread i read a while back where a guy said he took his floor mats out at the track for weight reduction. smells like rice to me. if all this is the case, im going to take the stitching out of my leather seats and remove every other lug nut from my wheels.

Lets put it this way, if you run 13.01 with a loaded car you coulda done 12.8-9 with a stripper...nuff said, pull out your back seat and spare tire and its all teh same.

Things like A/C, power seats, power windows, power mirrors, CD player, and others add up really fast when it comes to weight. I've never seen a stripper Z or T/A, but I bet it's good for a few less tenths in the 1/4. There is a calculator for this type of thing at http://users.erols.com/srweiss/calcehp.htm
My numbers are probably way off, but according to this thing: 3500lb car w/320 fwhp = 12.93 seconds
3100lb car w/320 fwhp = 12.41 seconds

sterio=100#
power mirrors=50#
power seats=100#
A/C (all Z's came w/ AC as far as i know)=100#
power windows=50#

Total = your 400#....yeah, sorry. THe actually difference would be around 10# for the mirrors and doors, 10-15# or so for the seats, 15-25for the extra speakers/CD unit. and in unsure on the A/C. There is a list posted that has the weight of EVERY option that i used to have. The strippers, all told, arent THAT much lighter, i would think 100# at the extreme.

I repeat:

My numbers are probably way off
Although I still think 100lbs is a little low. How much do you figure T-tops add over a hardtop?

Actually, the only reason I bought a stripper car, was because I couldn't afford a loaded Z-28. I saved up the money while I was in high school, and was 16 years old at the time. I didn't need anything with power seats, power windows, power mirrors, or any power for that matter " I had to have the LS1 though, no exceptions". Just something to pimp around town with. You wouldn't believe the game I was spitting after I bought that car. After I get out of college is when I'm going to make this camaro my race car, and then buy a SS with all the beans and whistles.

.......i have nothing against lt1's. i have one sitting in my garage with turbo hot pipes being fabbed for it right now. and a turbo 350 along shortly. with that said though, i think the matter of it is that you have to spray to keep up with the ls1. nobody was taking any shots at you.

A stripper Z is significantly lighter than other F-bodies.

Hardtop.
No fog Lights.
No uprgaded stereo/Cd changer
No leather.
No power seats.
No power mirrors.
16 in wheels/tires.
No power steering cooler
No ASR
No heavy/upgraded SS/SLP suspension components(for example, obviously not on every Camaro anyways)

Very significant weight savings, most likely around 300 pounds, or more. Plus the benifits of less unsprung weight/rolling resistance from the wheels and tires.

Hrmmm, now that you mention the other stuff. WEll, I had a fully loaded LT1 Trans Am. Woulda traded for a stripper Z w/6-speed in a heart beat. I like roll up windows. My 5.0 has electric, tehy are fully functional, but i would ahve preferred rollup and regular locks, personally. Less **** to break.
