Point of my post is that there are cases where someone with money buys a car like an M3 thinking it's the fasting thing out there and will probably get pissed when a car that he looks down on stays right next to him.

actually theres several engine options for the 3 series BMW's
rangin from the base 2.4 liter dohc 24v inline6 rated at 184bhp to the 3.2 liter dohc 24v inline6 putting out 333horses which is probably the one you faced...........not 2 shabby but the faster ones are the the 5 series sedans and the 6 and 7 series.......the 7 series has a 6.0 liter 48v V-12 putting out 438hp but cost over $100,000
personally if i had to drive a sport luxury car id take a cadillac STS-V putting out 440hp and it retails for about $75,000+

man you guys are givin the new M3 too much credit. Its a 280whp 3400lb car with most of that HP being peak HP. Under 5k rpm it doesnt create much more area under the curve than the old 240hp motor. LS1 has around 315whp stock and torque numbers that plain OWN the bmw motor.
Not a bad car, but I like the older m3s MUCH more. Only 2850lbs

More than 100hp/liter in a N/A motor, exquisite fit and finish, awesome chassis, great transmission, oh and did i mention an interior that is just SLIGHTLY better than your average f-body ...
It's not all about the engine, it's about the total package. Can i make a 1985 mercury capri a 10 second car? Yep. However, somehow, I'd rather have your average SLOWER evo ...
I own an F-body, and yes you're right, strictly comparing power, ls1's own. However, the rest of the car around it loses a little ground stock vs. stock w/your average bimmer.

Ohh if your talkin in those terms than yeah the M3 owns pretty much every american car hard.
I still think the thing is a bit too porky for such a small displacement engine. It does create great torque for what it is but still nothing like an LS1. The Camaros and firebirds ect can get away with being 3600-3700lbs cause that LS1 creates tons of torque.
Now I know why I wasnt blown away with my bosses M3 convertible. I just checked and the convertibles are 3700lbs. When he nailed it I felt like the initial kick in the pants was no stronger than my automatic maxima but than as the revs climbed I noticed thats really where the difference lay. The car just keeps that pace up all the way to redline where as the vq35 I have in my car starts to really run out of steam around 5-6k

With my 96 LT1 Z28 i raced a 20xx m3 and from the light I pulled him. I think I only had intake/cutout at that time. Ha this kid was in my graduating class and had been talking **** for months about how I couldnt drive, ends up he gave it too much gas getting on the highway after we turned around that he flew off the highway and crashed his mommys car!! Karma can be a bitch.. Im glad I went to Bondurant.

I really want to do something like that, but the cost scares me. Mind telling how much for a decent bit of instruction?

A lot of you have no idea what M3's are capable of. They run the around the same times stock LS1's run. Some actually run better times while some run worse times. I can't believe how thick-headed some of you are. This is not a flame by the way. Take this lightly.

I raced a 2002 Vert M3 and **** on him.
It was some young kid " younger than me " and he was holding this car down.
I guess the verts are real heavy?
Im not sure, but I won. Ive won as many as Ive lost, but beating a car thats 5X more expensive then your own always feels good.

Trust me go to the track and watch what each car runs consistently and there wont be a doubt in your mind which is quicker.

But again, in terms of pure speed, given equal drivers and stock set-up, the Ls1 wins MOST races. But there's more to a car than how fast it is, which is why bmw charges a 20k premium over an f-bod, and more importantly, why people pay it.
If I had 50-60k to spend on a car, would i buy an m3? Maybe. I'd certainly test drive one for a day or two. Odds are I'd try to find an 06 Zo6 on sale or just save a few more pennies and dimes.

Although powerful, it's not their power that makes them so fast. BMW are masters at perfect gearing.... they can squeeze a lot more seat of your pants feeling out of less power. Stock vs. Stock you should be able to beat him.... I know I raced one from a roll when I was stock... and I pulled about 2 cars on him from 50 - 90

^Yep.
I just wish BMW had kept to light chassis. The new M3s are the same weight as a hardtop 4th gen~3450.
Their type of powertrain is simply perfect for a lightweight car. Yet I remember the last CSL package M3 (good luck finding one or affording one) was not much lighter than the average Evo. It was about 3100lbs I think.
