Default Difference between LS1 and LT1?

I raced my buddies LT1 camaro last night. its a 93, if that matters. He said he had only an intake, catback, and chip on it. I have a Lid and a catback installed now. Anyways, we went from around 65 mph, so it was a 3rd gear race (he said he couldnt get his 315's to hook below that, i think he needs to stop dumping it from 5k on a roll race ) anyways, I pulled away from him, ended up about 3 cars ahead by the end of 4th gear. but expected more. granted, if we had gone down to 20 mph i think it would have been better, and maybe thats the only issue. but I thought the LS1 was almost a full second faster than the LT1

if you would have kept racing up to a higher speed you would have been further in front of him. LS1 cars have much better top end

from down low is where the lt1 shines. they have great torque down low. i used to own a 97 z28 and she would pull nicely down low but top end is where the ls1 would just start to walk away.

If he has 315s than he must have some fatter rubber than stock. I'm not 100% positive, but I would bet money that LT1s did not come with that size tire from GM. Does he have a set of Drag Radials? Not that it matters at a 65 roll race, but if he does have DRs than you had better be carefull if you go from a dig.

While LT1s are usually slower than an LS1, I wouldn't underestimate them at all. They are still a strong running car. I think your results are about right.

Teach him how to drive so you guys can go from lower speeds
should be a good race (LT1's are only good down low)

O and good kill

I was going to tell him this very thing... but i decided to be nice. His tires arent great, they did spin some, but he does have 315s on 17'' Torque Thrusts. I have some traction issues in 1st gear at the high rpms (start to hop a little over 5k) but he said he cant even keep it in 2nd gear. I think he just dumps at the start of the race when just hitting the gas from a roll will suffice. either way, i forgot that since I put that distance on him from 65, going from a stop would be much worse for him. doing a roll race makes the assumption that IF he were to stay nose to nose with me up to 65 then these were the results. we did do a 45 mph race in 2nd gear and I put about a bus on him. he said he was still in 3rd... but u have to be pretty dense to try to race in 3rd at 45 through the t56.

about his traction issues, did LT1s, or camaros, or the 93s or anything about his car have a different suspension setup than my TA? He has had suspension work done, and i think its handling instead of drag, which could give these results, but i figured even a handling package will be as good if not better than stock.

LT1s having better low end torque than an LS1 is a myth. LS1 and LT1 dyno graphs have proven that LS1s make just as much, if not more, torque down low than an LT1. Case in point I owned a 96 Z28 and a 2001 WS6. The LT1 cars highest torque was still lower than the the LS1 cars torque at its lowest starting point, I think it started at something like 280 tq and the LT1 car only managed 260 tq at its highest point.

if I'm not mistaken, aren't the 93's a little quicker due to speed density over mass air?

LS1 makes more torque but the LT1 makes more down lower in the RPM band. Doesn't really matter if you're going from a roll like that. I don't know why he'd have a hard time hooking up from below 65 with the stock 245s, let alone 315s lol.
I have headers, intake, and 3.73s with my 96 M6 vert. I'll race my buddies auto headers/intake '00 WS6 from a 3rd gear roll just like that. We're dead even until about 115 then he'll start walking me easily. It really depends on the condition of the LT1 I guess

wait til he cams that car... itll be a closer race.

LT1 doesnt have a good cam for top end, thats why the fall on their face.

Speed Density vs. MAF makes no difference in power if they are both properly tuned.

think about it, I dont know how long the cars are, but lets call 3 lengths about 30 feet just to be sure I dont undershoot. if you are trapping >100mph, it wont take u long to cover 30 feet. maybe a tenth or two?

a length is ALOT more then 10 feet...the length, tip to tip, of a 4th and 3rd gen is 16.5 FEET long....so 3 lengths would be nearly 50 feet, not 30.

I just looked it up and........ I guess Im a terrible judge of distance. just over 16 feet according to KBB. I didnt think it was that long, oh well. I know what i did now, I was envisioning my dads pontoon which is 28 feet, and I was thinking 18 feet... so i was like um... must be 10 feet and.... im retarded... my bad.

Its pretty close. When I drove my 4.6 mustang LT1's were fair game. They edged out when I was stock, but a few bolt ons later and I left them no problem (stock ones, that is). LS1s are close to a second faster than 4.6 mustangs. It makes sense to me.
