The Mustang isn't a muscle car, never was. the term musclecar was coined in the 1960's to describe a mid size car with a a full sized car's engine. Mustangs, Camaros, et, al, have always been pony cars, not musclecars, they may be muscle cars, but they're not musclecars.

 

Then I guess the Ford GT should count also, thats right chevy had the Impala SS.

 

THANK YOU!! Everytime that comes up around people that drive F-bodies/Mustangs/Corvettes, they almost argue that they have a muscle car. So then I drop the question, "Is a Miata with a 302 swap a muscle car?" They either drop it, or move on to, "No, it's still Japanese." So then I just go

 

I work for a Ford dealer and I had a guy tell me he would take me in the Vette in his GT500. I in my nicest voice told him he would get snapped off! He said oh what do you have done, told him I have the same hp in a much lighter car N/A, and a 100 shot for adding insult to injury. He was so adamant that he would win so I just left it at that!

The GT500's have run 12.2@117 at the hands of MM&FF but real world,real driver times are usually in the 12.7-13.0 times. A function of a heavy car on narrow tires.

Nope the Lightning has the 5.4 2 valve SOHC with a S/C

The Ford GT and the Shelby GT500 have the 5.4 DOHC with a S/C

The difference between the GT and GT500 is the block and supercharger.

The heads are the same, but no manley rods like the Terminators.

I'd like to see a Shelby GT and a BOSS go at it.

 

Maybe someone that has never been on the drag strip or its their first run in the car ever at the track. With a single night with a hand full of runs any decent (not good) driver could get a stock GT500 better than 12.7 easily.

 

Well seeing that the guy that got too 12.2@117 is a pro driver with 1,000's of drag strip passes I doubt a reasonably competent driver could get within 2 or 3 tenths of that without a whole lot of seat time.

Plus I deal in real world scenarios who cares what a car will run with all the moon and stars aligned? My question is always if I come up against X car from a dig or a roll can I expect to win. And for me the answer is a GT500 would get launched from a dig and snapped off from a roll.

 

BTW to give you some background I work for the enemy (FORD) and have driven a few GT500's.

So? Does that make you an expert? I'm saying what I have seen. I've seen no GT500 at the track do worst than 13.0. Infact I've never even seen one in the 13's.

And MT may not drag race but there more competent than alot of drivers out there. They got 12.7's

 

In my old car ('94 Integra GS-R), I got a better time stock than any magazine (or anyone else that I can find) ever got. Every car is different, every track is different, all conditions are different... owners can, and often do, get better times out of their cars than magazines.

My point was the GT500 is hard to launch, and with the best driver pretty much ever its capable of 12.2@ 117.

Its like alot of the EVO and STi guys that get excited by the 0-60 times not realizing how they get them. Not many people do redline clutch drops everyday!

 

Most of those track times are with Evan Smith driving the **** out of them. Your average driver is not going to cut it.

 

arn't the older, stock, LS1's out running the "new" mustangs still? and the LT1's are right there with the mustangs. maybe they are just letting Ford catch up for a few years.
