Default k20 vs. ls1

So this guy that goes to where I work often challenged me to a friendly race at the track next week. All I know is that's its a K20 swapped into a stripped down hatch with full exhaust (sounds like ****) and heard its pretty fast. I don't know jack **** about imports but I'm wondering if I should worry at all?

I have a 98 T/A A4 with lid, cutout, K&N and that's it. Its my daily and can borrow some radials the day of the race.

I've been looking at some videos on streetfire and some of them are monsters but I don't know to what extent the ones in the video are modded. Think I stand a chance.

I'd hate to lose to a Honda but I rather lose to one that back down from one

It depends on what he's got done. A bolton/tuned RSX-S is a mid-high 13s car @ ~102-104mph. But put that K20 in a Civic that's 600lbs lighter, it could get ugly. Good luck.

k20 is basically the ls1 for hondas(most guys like them,i know many who hate them)..they can handle great power,boost,etc...if its done right he can rev to about 10k or so...now if its in a hatch id be very worried possibly..

Race the guy and post results. Last K20/gutted Honda that wanted to run me backed down when I called his bluff. No, I wasn't in a 9 sec car. Rice cakes are healthy...

Yeah I would be concerned.. Those cars are deff 12 second cars all motor, and can be even faster.

Strip your car before going to the track

If he knows how to drive it, then worry. He must launch it correctly at the track to pull you. Same goes for you as well though. I watch people at the track that actually have fast imports but they can't launch them correctly or they just don't have the right tires and sit there spinning. I need to mount my DR's this week because thats all I do when second gear hits at the track.

There is a shop here that put a k20 in a crx and it was running mid to low 14s at the track. Might have been the driver but who knows either way if I spent 5gs on a motor and only ran a 14 I would be pissed.

There is a shop around here that has made a K20 into a K27. Yes, a 2.7lt stroker with 300whp all motor so you need to look out

Common sense says it's the driver. A K20 in a stripped hatch is a big time hp/wgh ratio.

Can you guys elaborate on the K20 engine? I thought that Honda's bad *** was like a B something engine? What do I need to watch for?

the biggest thing that will stand out is a red valve cover. A true JDM k20a will come with a red valve cover, and for the most part guys will not get rid of them( very well liked in the honda community). The other obvious thing is that the motor is sitting backwards from how a normal honda motor sits. Instead of the header wrapping down from the front and under the engine, it will come right off the back of the block. Then there are the k20a2 (200hp) from the rsx-s and the k20a3 from the civic Si. A true JDM k20 with any bolt ons and ecu in a hatch is going to kill the thread starter as he stands now. I had this in my car before my camaro, and with a set of cams and ecu I made 250whp and redlined 9200. Mine was mild compaired to many out there. 250+whp in something that only weighs 2000lbs in going to equal death to a basic bolton camaro.

Thanx for that info. I appreciate your reply.

1st is a mild k20a2(not the fastest motor like your friend has) with basic boltons against a stock z06 http://www.k20a.org/jalal/Mark%20vs%20Tomi.mpg
2nd is a turbo k20a against a viper running low 10's http://www.cheesefrog.com/frog/cheezevsal.mpg

enjoy and good luck

Yeah and there are 11 second 16G DSMs and 12.8 stock F-bodies and 10 second Z06s on radials too.

Its so damn uncommon that its what statisticians call an "outlyer". Its a peice of data that while valid, skews the results of an analysis for little benefit.

agreed. while there are some that fast, not many of those are daily drivers that you would run into on the street. What is common is very very low 12's. with slicks, then 11's. This is just full boltons in full street trim
