Default Highway Roll Techniques

Hey guys, I just bought a 2002 T/A WS6. It's my first manual car ever. I had a couple questions and wanted to get some pointers.

On a roll what gear should you at let's say... 60mph? I downshifted to fourth... however I felt the engine could do more... should I have dropped to third?

How do you know what gear you can drop to... safely without harming the drivetrain??

Sorry if I sound stupid... but I have only owned Auto cars before...

Thanks.

2nd gear is good for 40 roll and 3rd for 60.

Dude don't know what other cars you have owned but you have a lot of power under your ***... Learn to drive it. Then go out and race.

lol, take your time learning the car, especially being its standard and not an A4..

I drove very chill for months when i started driving my 500hp camaro.. big difference from the normal DD, although its automatic so its a lot easier to get used to

just be careful

When I got my first ls1 m6 i thought it was easier to drive the higher the rpms when I shifted. I usually shift now from 2500-3k depending on how spirited i was driving. But when I first got it i was shifting at like 2200 which is very low but motor is loud still. Just a little fyi, try shifting at higher rpm than i did lol.

You always want to try and be above 4K rpm's. After that you should be in powerband up until about 6K-ish...maybe not even that high. That's usually my range, it sucks when you have gears and you try and race other cars with gears because everyone has a different preferred speed to race. Find what's best for you and go from there.

Ya seeing this is your first powerful M6 I'll share a little personal experience. Now I had driven a manual before but not with this kind of power. I drove it home with illegal plates so I took it easy. Anyhow the day I got plates and insurance it was time to get it out. Well I went to the local coffee shop and picked up a friend. I was doing like first and second gear punches but nothing serious. Well I pull up to a four way stop and my friend was like take off blah blah blah... Well I eased first and he gets all bummed then I punch 1st that was cool and then dumped the clutch going to 2nd and hey looky there here comes my rear end. The guy with me looked over and was like "Holy **** you just got side ways in second" Ya was not expecting that. So learn to drive and be careful. They unhook easy on dry pavement. Don't drive in the rain or snow if you don't have too. Have fun these cars are a blast to drive. Enjoy!

Be patient (and wise) while you're feeling the car out. My previous car was an A4 Corvette, so I was smart enough not to stomp the gas out of a curve, however with the SS I can still get sideways shifting into 2nd and 3rd....big adjustment from the C4.

As for optimal rpm and gear for roll racing, if you have stock gears 40 mph is ideal for 2nd gear, 60 mph is ideal for 3rd, etc. If you swap the rear gear from the stock 3.42 to 3.90's or 4.10's, be prepared to relearn your points!

Finally, enjoy it!

no third you want to be at 70 or better, 60 will bog the motor i do not shift out of 2nd till 70 and i have a m6 so you want at least 70 in third and 45 in second will be fine. i top out of first at about 45 second at 70 so that is why i say second at 45-55 and third at 70-85

LS1's come alive at the top end and racing from a roll you want every bit of high rpm. I think thats why my bolt on 99 Cobra beat so many F-body's is the whole 3rd gear at 60!

60 is a bad spot for an M6 ls1. I always run from 50-55 in 2nd and i only run from 70 in 3rd.
If all else fails downshift to 2nd at 60. Do not put it in 3rd at 60. I found this out the hard way. The RPM's are too low and you'll get walked

Practice makes perfect. Don't over rev it....and stay off the rev-limiter. Have fun. That is all.

when i had my formula with 3:42s i would take 1st gear to 45 max, and 2nd gear to 75 max, so if i was feely froggy and wanted to be really loud and scare the **** out of someone, a 1st gear drop doing 40mph or a 2nd gear drop at 70 would do the trick. its a quick shift after that, so be prepared.

My current SS has 3:73s, so i cant do that anymore

But i wouldnt be in 3rd gear at 60

In my Cobra my advantage was being able to go to 2nd from a 65 or even 70 mph roll. Powershift 3rd and pray for dear life that the stupid shifter didn't cheat me out of victory and pull out near the top of 3rd usually! But really you have to know the car especially when your roll racing my 2nd gear goes up to 90 mph now so I can really get froggy with it from a freeway roll!
