Default 1st race with the SS vs 96 Cobra

First of all car is basically a stock 2000 Camaro SS M6 with some slp options. Has dual/dual exhaust, slp lid, chrome 17" zr1's. I've owned the car for a little over a month and I just rebuild the T56 and installed a LS7 clutch. I ported the throttle, bump stop, tb bypass, egr delete, FRA and that is all. Nothing to really improve hp much.

So I was leaving the motocross races and I see a mustang pull up behind me as I was heading out. I decided to get on it and carve up a few corners and he was right there with me. When we got onto the main road he was on my *** so I banged her through the gears and kinda left him behind. I pass a few cars and take a right at the light, now I'm on a 4 lane road and dont know were the mustang went. Next thing I know he pulls up next to me and he revs, while I'm thinking I dont really want to race only have 500 miles on brand new rebuild tranny and new clutch.

He had 1 passenger and I have 2 buddys with me (theres and extra 350lbs). I was in 4th gear just cruising (about 30mph) and I see he wants to go. So I drop her down into 2nd around 4500rpm and he nails it so I put the hammer down right after he does. He pulls about 1/2 a car in front of me, and before I rebuilt the tranny I could never bang the gears fast (drill mod helped im sure). 6000 rpm I bang 3rd chirp the tires and its still a dead even race, 6000 rpm I bang 4th gear chirp the tires (holy crap never done that before) and I start to cruise on by him about 1/2 car ahead of him and we shut it down around 100 mph or so.

So we both cruise beside each other and his car sounds killer I asked him what mods he has. He mentioned headers and a full exhaust, I'm pretty sure he had some gears because he was shifting through the gears fast. He wanted to race again from the light but I did not feel comfortable doing this with my new clutch. He banged a couple of gears from the light and that thing sounded amazing. I had fun and it was my first race with the Camaro, I figuired not bad with 2 passengers and being stock. I think my car is a factory freak, but too bad our local track is closed. I'll be installing headers this weekend. I thought the Cobra ran pretty good for being a 4.6 with headers. I thought it was a stock 2 valve and I was going to kill him. Good thing it wasn't a 03-04 Cobra. Sorry for the long rant, does this sound normal for 4th gen? I wish I knew what this thing would run in the 1/4. Does anyone know what type of times these Cobras run? Thanks guys great website.

With his slight weight advantage, that sounds pretty accurate... had ya'll kept going you would have continued to pull, but a DOHC 4.6 with full exhaust and a good intake (which I'm assuming he had) is a strong motor. He might have had gears, but who knows.

Good kill. 500 miles is enough to break in the clutch. I wouldn't worry about it. Give it hell! 96-98 cobras with mild bolt-ons can run anywhere from 12.8's to 13.8's. Driver mod is a huge factor too. Sounds like you got a strong runner on your hands.

Yea, your car sounds pretty healthy. Do those earlier cobras have the same engine and gearing as the new edge's? I thought there was a pretty signifigant difference, but this race sounds like a 99/01 cobra. Or are those 96-98 4v just a MUCH better motor than the other 2v's.

MUCH better motor than the 96-98 2v's. They were 305hp/300tq on the crank and weren't overrated either.

good race...there's nothing like banging gears in these cars. Probably would have gotten ugly if you didn't have the passengers

I have a 00 SS with similar mods, just lid and ls7 clutch and nothing else, stock exhaust and no slp options. Down here in FL she ran a 13.5 @ 105 with a 2.1 60'. It was about 90 degrees out, dont know what the DA was. You should be around the same or a hair quicker. I've also got 150k miles on her too.

I thought the 98s were 320hp? or are you refering the the OPs 96?

Nice run OP.

FYI - they had 3.27 gears. So if he ran with you, like that, I would assume he had 3.73s, unless you took it easy because of the clutch and stuff.

Nice runs! I've always had a thing for older Cobras

If this rain passes, I'll be running my friends '96 at Midnight Madness tomorrow. We'll see how it goes

So I was wrong in thinking they changed in 98, not 99. You've never had a 'brain fart'?

Headers came in the mail today, should see my flowmaster merge tomorrow as well as msd wires/ngk plugs. The headers will be going in with poly motor/trans/torque arm mounts. Have you guys ever looked up how much money they want for a set of headers for those 4.6 Cobras?
I plan on getting hp tuners and an LS6 intake here in a few months. Just not sure if I sould get Hp tuners or the intake first. I'm thinking hp tuners will be fun to play with, also increase my fuel mileage.

Man those Cobras sure do sound badass.
