Default cut springs write up!

I am looking for a write up on cutting the rear springs in an LS1 f body. getting the spring out is easy I'm just asking for any tips on cutting the springs or any pointers for anyone who has done it. What tool is easiest for cutting the spring?

Not recommended but usually 1/2 coil will yield around 1-1/4" drop.

Did it on couple cars, best to use is a cut off wheel. Not a torch.

Buy new springs. New springs are cheap. Do it right.

I'm going to cut them. if I have any problems Ill change them. I'm pretty sure that a lowering spring is stiffer than and cut stock spring. but I want a softer spring for weight transfer. that's why i've decided to cut them, i'm getting both characteristics and it's relatively free. i'll cut half a coil and if that's not low enough I do the hose mod. if one coil is and inch or more that'll be fine for me.

OK my bad. I thought you were trying to lower the thing. But now it appears that you are a quarter mile guy.

I thought lowering was bad for traction and weight transfer?

it is....technically at least. It is possible to run good 60's on lowered cars, but cutting the springs is not how you do that.

Hello, not trying to hijack your thread but the f bodies work better with a little stiffer rear. I have my rear springs on sale for $79.95 per pair. They lower the car 1" and we have several 8 second quarter mile cars with our rear springs installed. If you have any questions please give me a call.

IMO,
Do the "Hose mod" first, cutting the springs is going to change the spring rate, and if you cut enough to give a decent drop the springs aren't going to sit very good in the upper spring pocket.

I wish people would quit telling me to not cut them, i'm cutting them! I already have QA1 coilovers up front and relocation brackets on the back. the front is already lowered so i'm just lowering the back to match it. and lowering it WILL help with traction.

the thing with that routine is that the hose mod only lowers it 3/4 of an inch. I want 1-1 1/4. if I do the hose mod first and don't like it, I will have to buy a new isolator and cut the spring.

Why would you need to buy a new isolator, you're just removing it?

Since you're going to cut the springs anyway
Do both, hose mod and spring cutting. That way you minimize how much spring you're cutting off.

whatever, i would agree that if you must cut them than do the hose mod as well so you wont have to cut as much. Also, like stated above, just keep the isolator, dont trash it, so if you dont like it you can put it back in.

I cut mine half a coil and did the hose mod. To tell you the truth the cars handling didn't change that much. I'm actually hoping to run 11's with the car setup like this.

About a half a coil in the rear gives it a little rake which i think looks awesome
