Default Issue with spring install.

Ok so put my new Strano springs in the rear no prob (re-using the De Carbons till I get Koni's) and the DS was really easy too. Then came the pass side.

Everything went 2x as fast as the Driver side then BAM major problem. The 15mm nut at the top of the strut assembly was rusted to hell! WTF. Budged it with a 15mm deep socket but top of the shock started to move with the nut. So deep sock is no use now. Using a 15mm box wrench and clamps on top is getting me no where!!!

Please someone tell me what my options are now!?!? Im letting the top soak in some penetrating lube for the night to try again tomorrow.

Note: I posted this in they install video thread first but this is a major issue!

Sounds like you need to bite the bullet and buy a cheap shock for the right front.
Spray some liquid wrench on it and let it sit for about 1 hour, if that doesn't loosen it up, it probably never willl break free.

Try some heat. I keep one of those little propane torches like plumbers use for situations like this.

Ok all done!

Took it to Pep-Boys and they hit it with an impact wrench and got it off.

Here are my results:

Before springs:

After springs:

Note: I did the heater hose mod with the rear springs.

When putting the shock/shock mount back together, use a stainless steel nut so you won't have to fight the corrosion again if you ever have to service that area.

Is your first sentence supposed to mean that you completed the rear and moved on to the front shocks? Or were you still talking about the rear shocks?
Very difficult to understand what you mean.

Just did mine for the 2nd time in 10 years this weekend Summit springs / Tokico shocks. The left side is always worst than the right corrosion wise, do yourself a favor cut the shaft off and replace the front 2 shocks now, sh*t borrow the money if you have too, you will probably be dealing with a bugered up shaft anyway once you get the rusted nut off.

Yeah thats what I did but I wont have to worry about rust anymore cause the car will stay dry in the garage and hopefully wont see rain again.

Sorry if it was confusing. I did the rear springs first then the driver side then the pass side is where I ran into the problem.

I dont drive car in the rain anymore so I wont have to worry about it anymore. Besides I'll be getting Koni's as soon as they can make them fast enough!

Last time I did mine, I just applied a generous coating of grease to the top nut and shaft threads. It has been kept indoors and rarely driven at all, and only in nice weather since then.

Oh - and I put anti-seize compound on the upper part of the shaft, where it goes through the mount. Should be much easier this time, as soon as I get my front Koni's from Sam.

anybody need some very low mileage decarbons?
