I think this is the part :

Tried to get one from GM last week. Discontinued and no stock (according to my local parts guy). Picked them up at Autozone instead.

Naa, thats the piece that is under the control arm mount and bolts to the shock. The piece I'm talking about is only sandwiched above the control arm mount and under the body. It doesnt actually mount to anything. Thanks for the input tho...

Yes, and Parts Taxi seems to have it, seems like #8 in the pic (this diagram is missing some things, and some are out of order, so better clarify before buying):

The part I posted is sandwiched also. I thought the two bolts and two nuts showed in the picture were included incase you needed to replace them when you removed the shock mount itself. Are you 100% sure on this? In case it matters the part I posted is mostly rubber and seems like it's metal where it slips over the shock shaft.

I beleive it's just to keep the top of the bayonet mount from possible rubbing the metal around it, besides that I don't see any other purpose/ use it has.

The "dogbone" (isolator) you posted goes BELOW the control arm support, but ABOVE the strut mount and is seems not pictured in that diagram, unless *it* is actually #8.

Wow, GM's Service Manual picture is even more worthless:

So the part I bought goes between Part 16 of that diagram and the body? I'm sure I will figure it out when I start pulling it apart.

Yea the piece in question goes above 16 and is all rubber, similar in shape to the other piece but a little smaller and no metal.

I think you're right Blu, I cant think of any importance it has.

Gabriel is junk -- had multiple failures of their strut mounts in the past -- their mount bolts are whimpier and the metal inserts don't hold up and broke right through -- wouldn't buy their parts again.

Yes, the dogbone (insulator) goes below part 16 and just above part 15; the other rubber-only part goes above part 16.

Another useless view, the 16 is 3 here:

I replaced the wore out stock mount and insulators with MOOG units, they have a good rep so hopefully they last, the studs however are shorter on top, not an issue except I have a STB with washers the nut doesnt go all the way on

Lightbulb

Here's another picture, probably the best yet, but unclear. This is from the 93-02 Camaro Parts Manual PDF (128 MB), which you should all grab here:

This all-rubber piece seems to prevent any metal on metal rubbing from the top of the shock shaft on the upper control arm mount -- and must be part of that assembly.

The pieces in post 1 are the "all rubber" units. They fit into the upper control arm piece. They act like a seal to keep water, dust and rocks from collecting in the pocket that the shock nut is in. Moisture still seems to find its way inside, though.

Be sure to pack grease all around that shock nut to keep rust away.

The bigger "steel wrapped in rubber trapazoid piece" is what the shock bolts down to. That piece has to be on there.

Here's a better pic. Notice the small rubber piece on the right? It drops right into the sheetmetal hole with a rubber lip to seal it.
