Default Wilwood SL4R BBK.. Install and First Impressions..

Well, as some of you know, I spread my C5 calipers during the last track day I attended at Willow Springs, running the Big Track. After spreading my calipers, a friend of mine told me he upgraded his CMC2 race car brakes to a StopTech kit he got for a deal he couldn't turn down. Well, because of this he had a Wilwood SL4R kit that he was going to sell for a song. I couldn't refuse them at the cost he was selling them for.

The kit came with the SL4R calipers that were only 3 race weekends old, 3 sets of pads (1 set NIB Wilwood PolyMatrix A, 2 used sets of Hawk DTC70's), 2 sets of rotors (1 set NIB, 1 set with 3 weekends on them.. Minor heat checks), Brackets, Bolts, shims, etc. etc. The only thing the kit was missing was a set of brake lines. No problem there, Earls Lines is only 10 mins away from me.

Well, today I got to swapping the kit over.. I have been running the C5 setup so I couldn't use my spindles (PAB mounting tabs cut off) so a buddy of mine decided he wanted my old kit (calipers spread a bit, but still ok for street driving) so we spent the entire afternoon swapping everything over from my car to his and vice versa.

I got my buddies spindles on, the wilwoods are mounted and they look fantastic.. I took the car for a quick spin after the install and I must say, I am impressed. The brakes feel quite good. Pedal pressure is firm, brakes grab aggressively but not uncontrollably and they seem to modulate under hard braking quite well.

God I can't wait until the next HPDE event.. Hmm.. To run Cal-Speedway infield or not..

Looks like a great setup. What's the Wilwood part number on that caliper? Are you going to use it with a stock master cylinder?

The safety wire? Note how it's wrapped - if one bolt tires to turn loose, it only tightens the bolt it is attached to and vice versa. Probably not entirely failure PROOF, but about as close as you can get. Safety wiring is something typically seen in the aviation industry, but you'll also see it a lot with high performance automotive stuff where the price of failure (in this case it would be the rotor separating from the hub) would be too costly.

I don't really care for the color too horribly much, but for the price and performance, cost/value ratio was good enough for me to completely overlook it.

This kit is the 12.2" rotor... Can easily run 13's by doing nothing more than shimming the caliper to the proper height, but there is likely no need to run a larger rotor on this setup. CMC2 is limited to 12.2" and most of the guys there have no issues.. And thats a full on race environment.

Those Enkei wheels they are behind are 17" wheels. 17" wheels that were having fitment issues with the C5 kit I might add.. The cool thing is that everything is backspaced further with this kit so you get more clearance than normal.

The part number for the entire kit is 140-10691..
The calipers alone are:
Left Hand - Part No: 120-10697-R
Right Hand - Part No: 120-10697-L

The 4 pots that I have offer larger pistons than the 6 pot counterparts that Wilwood offers, they are also a bit smaller so technically they offer better clamping and they are stiffer.. The only thing that the 6 pots really give you over the 4 pots is a bit better modulation of the brakes under heavy braking. (threshold braking)

A stock Master Cylinder is fine for these brakes.

As MeentSS02 mentioned, it is purely for safety.. The last thing you ever want to have happen is for the rotor to separate from the hub.. You would loose all braking and most likely 99% of your ability to steer the car where you want it to go.

I highly recommend safety wiring all of your hat bolts if you end up with a 2 piece rotor.. The bolts can be a lot more expensive if you buy the pre-drilled ones, but peace of mind is worth the extra bucks it may cost me. You can also drill your own if you have the equipment.

Stock calipers with aggressive street pads.. Don't really need or want much more back there and with C-Clip axles, its kind of counter-productive to run fixed calipers.. Too many issues with piston knock-back and a dead pedal when barreling down into a braking zone at 135+mph.

Wow that looks great. Is the weight of the 2 piece rotor fairly close to your C5 setup???

I think overall I shed some good weight.. Dont know what the total weight savings are, but it is VERY significant.

I just posted my CTS-V brake kit up for sale that I never got around to installing so I can run a 17" wheel. I'm going to purchase this kit. Thanks for making this thread!
