Default The not so expensive secret to elliminating wheel hop!!

iv posted this before, about a year ago, but i see a lot of people talking about it so i figured id post again. i got my car (99 trans am 6 speed) in September of 2010. the car was completely stock other than a flow-master muffler. i had wheel-hop like every other f-body car so i did some research. after a few weeks i narrowed the problem down to the tranny mount.

the wheel hop is caused by the twisting of the rubber tranny mount which transfers to the torque-arm which throws off pinion angle (according to wat i found). i bought a polyurethane tranny mount form Advance Auto Parts for $30. it took me 20 minutes to install an was very simple/self explanatory.
(CAR WAS %99 STOCK) i pulled out of the driveway, pointed it straight, dropped the hammer from 3k an melted a very good set of tires in a perfectly straight line with ZERO wheel-hop!

Hope someone finds this useful cause i know i sure could have used it when i first got my car.

Well most peoples wheel hop is caused by incorrect suspension geometry. Yours was caused by a worn out part....may be helpful to some, but not all together a definite solution for curing wheel hop. Glad it fixed your problem though!

How are those poly trans mounts? I remember hearing awhile back that they're not a good idea for a street car if you don't want to hear a lot of road noise.

I heard that changing your tranny mount with changing the motor mounts to poly is bad for the car. is this true?

i took my poly tranny mount out after one day and tossed it in the garbage. nothing but 10x more noise and vibration. they work for some people but not for my car.

Doing what you are suggesting will get you a broken tailshaft and/or a broken 10 bolt.

My poly trans mount transmits more noise than my solid motor mounts. i know because i did them seperate. And its not really road noise as much as the feeling of various components moving in there, atleast for an automatic, it can get crazy at high speeds in OD.

The noise is probably a result of location of the mount more than anything else though.

I've heard mixed opinions on the poly trans mount. Recently while I had my WS6 in the shop for a clutch/slave swap, my mechanic approached me regarding my stock 113K mile tranny mount. He suggested a poly mount, and he knew exactly how I drive my car. Some spirited driving, a few burnouts, and thats really about it. I love the poly mount. Shifting in the car is nice and tight, but not too tight. For what it matters, I believe I have the stock hurst shifter in the car. I've had nothing but good luck with the poly trans mount, and when spring comes around and headers get installed I'll be going with poly motor mounts. After that, I'll be rebuilding the stock suspension with moog parts and evaluate where I'm at after that.

I have the poly transmission mount. Oh noes! Not noise!! If you don't want the car to be noisy then you bought the wrong car. I personally don't think it's that noisy. But what I hear is 400 hp anyway.. not really stock

Although getting the mount off your tail shaft is probably a better idea overall.. that I've been ignoring.

iv put 30,XXX VERY hard miles miles, an 6 sets of tires on the rear within the last year and have had no problems, its not noisy, its not a ruff ride, it shifts smooth, havent broken anything other than some ricer hearts. I personally love it, now im sure if u had an aftermarket cam it could seem worse since naturally the lope from the cam is going to shake the car more an seem worse but mine is stock valve train so its all good. im sorry if there was a misunderstanding, i wasnt saying this is the only way to fix the problem, just giving my problem an solution. trying to be helpful here.

I will tell you guys what's up with this by the end of the night. Waiting on UPS as we speak for my poly mount from energy suspension. I'm going to drop it in and post a review by tonight at the latest.

Hold up, is the poly mount from the autoparts store you bought the same as the energy suspension stuff? I know even moog does poly bushings but they're probably not the same durometer.

I thought you only want to install the tranny mount if (and only if) you have poly/solid motor mounts? Doing the tranny mount alone could lead to more problems than just curing wheel hop.

This is what's up its feels good and tight. Slightly more vibration but nothing I couldn't deal with. Couple hard launches and it holds dead in place. Along with a recently replaced stock tq arm mount, and the bilsteins I love the ride even on 20s
