I thought about it but never really considered it. There are a couple of SCCA events in my area about 30 miles from here. I just need to find the time (just like every thing else) to participate.

At this point I'd change only the arms. Change one thing at a time. And if you need to replace arms, just a reminder that I am a UMI dealer.

As for the tires. Ok, Consumer Reports knows it all. I was simply making a suggestion for an excellent all around Summer tire that is awesome in the wet and does not cost a fortune. The Pilot Super Sport is excellent as well. I don't care what Consumer Reports thinks to be honest.

+1 for trying autox. you're cars setup is overwhelming the tires.

I've run the nitto 555R2, stock F1s, Comp2s, and RT615s...the R2s were awesome, good grip right down to the bars but they don't last long and don't represent good value relative to the competition. The RT-615s are good on the street...I use them for autox and they are ok. They are responsive and provide good feedback but i was expecting more grip. i bought a set of comp2s this year...i've autox'ed them, done open lapping and lots of street driving...this is a fantastic all-round tire. very versatile. great response, excellent feedback, good grip (wet and dry)..you can really feel what the car is doing..Tread wear is 340 but you wouldn't believe it if you drove on them.

if you do start autox'ing, i think starting with a decent summer tire is a good idea and the comp2s IMO would serve you very well. I know other autox'ers who run the continental DW and they love them...their only complaint was about the contis having a softer sidewall than their previous tire...which were the starspecs. the latter is also a good tire but i've never run them. in fact, i don't know if they come in 275/40/17s...

oh and the stock F1s are good for burnouts/drifting.

Why not run the stock LCAs? unless you need adjustability...it won't hurt you to keep the money in your pocket.

i ran the tubular LCAs and ended up going back to the stockers...and was faster for it.

Part of the issue. I hated my boxed/poly LCA's with a passion. The binding made the rear skittish (load, load,load.....unload). Was not a fan.

Right because CR is just a bunch of bumbling idiots -- come on. There are not too many sources that rate a whole lot of tires against each other, so they do have a value proposition to many. I would love to see your tire reviews however, should you decide to start.

Presented as a useful data point, which is pretty well corroborated by other sources.

Here are some more, and guess who Car & Driver rated tops? Hint, it's not the Continental…

I hate the internet. Everyone is an expert....

Did I say the Pilot Super Sport sucked? No. In fact I like it very much. However, the Continental is generally better value, and isn't scary when it's 45 degrees like most summer only tires (not that I'd drive it snow or when it's 10 degrees outside).

Frankly at this point I don't care. I made a suggestion, that's all it was. I'm not going to argue about it.

I think consumer reports is probably good at rating tire wear, rain driveability, etc stuff like that. I'm thinking their ratings of how much traction a tire has is probably not very reliable though.. (is it really hard to believe?) Look at who's driving what in competition events and then you'll learn what kind of tires you should go for.

Maybe I missed it, maybe I don't recall, but the DW is available in 275/40-17. the Pilot Super Sport is not. I don't know what size tires 38DD2436 needs. But it's worth it to consider what is actually *useful* for his car.

Wheels and tires are next. I would like to stay with 17's but am on the fence with 18's. Haven't decided yet. Still searching for info. Just don't want to make a costly mistake. I've decided that my son and I will do AutoX. His 04 R32 does hold the road well. The next SCCA event is towards the end of the month.

I decided on the tuning fork Grand Sport wheel replicas on my SS and the Michelin PSS tires on them -- no regrets after the fact, but I was very hesitant up front to move up in size. In the end, I went with what I liked, and the size fitment had to be 18" x 9.5" +40 offset (the 17" GS wheel was not wide enough at 8.5"), and they are still at stock ride height at 275/35/18 tires. The old SS wheels found a new home on my RS, with BFG g-Force Sport COMP-2 275/40/17 tires -- an upgrade front the 245/50/16s which were on there before.

I don't know how to explain it much, but it seems like 17 inch wheels/tires are a sweet spot for autox or track events. I've heard that 18 inch wheels/tires feel like they handle a lot better.. but 17 inch wheels/tires somehow end up faster.

Combining the cheaper overall cost of wheel and tire options out there.. 17's are a no brainer for most drivers.

I certainly do not disagree with your move to go with 18s...It's hard to find 17x9 or 9.5" wheels with a less than +50 offset, especially for the front. so your stance will be better going with +40 offset. and you have more options should you choose to "upgrade" your brakes...

although i stayed with the 17" option due to tires and their prices...i can't help but wonder if in the aggregate, i'm limiting myself...for example, there are some pretty awesome tires available on the market that do not come in 275/17 but they do come in 275/18....if that is any indication of where the market is going then it may turn out to be better move than you thought...

That's true, there's almost like a certain category of tires that are available for muscle cars. You won't find certain Yokohama, Falken, Toyo, Bridgestone, Dunlop, etc tires for our sizes, but Nitto and Kumho are typically available.

OP, put your rear LCA's back on if you want to keep taking turns.

1. Lower your air pressure.
2. Try them again.

I find guys running NT05 Tires with 33+ psi in them at an event or in the summer out here in Vegas and they complain with the lack of grip/slick/etc.

I convince them to lower the psi to 28f/25r when cold. Like, OMG, stick city.
