Default Brake booster firewall flex - winter project

I finally decided to fix the flex in my 4th gen TA firewall when under hard braking. Now just have to wait for the snow and salt to go away to test it.

Slick. I'm assuming you fabricated it yourself? Let us know how the test drive goes.

The excellent idea. I noticed today actually how much the firewall flexes. It's more than I expected. Interested to find out how much this helps and whether you'd be making more?

I have a 6 speed in mine and it flexed bad, it's all but gone now (maybe a 1/8" at most) - I can make more no problem - but I want real data before I start selling them - just to make sure nothing weird happens.

Got over a year of miles on the brake booster / firewall stiffener. It works really well, it stops it from going forward as well as up. Another nice perk is the clutch pedal / shifts are much better as well now. It ties into the top and sides of the shock tower, two attachment points, and after a year, no stress risers or cracks.

The car is just a normal 2000 F body Trans Am set up for road and track and doubles as a Grand touring car. The cars got over 200 K on it; Last summer it hit 4 High speed autocross races (Midwest Council), tail of the dragon trip, Hwy 16a (Iron Mountain road - favorite), and touring laps around National Corvette track while on vacation
; just normal enjoyment of a F body

Here's the drawing if anyone wants to make their own, I don't have time to sell them and would rather just share them. If anyone actually wants more details just let me know.

I can also send DXF files to anyone with a plasma or laser table to cut their own, very easy to make and bend - plus it hidden and no own sees it.

Sam Strano now makes a part that does pretty much the same thing. $120 and 5 minute install.

Would you be willing to send me a .dxf? What thickness of material did you use?

Also, what does that middle hole on the drawing bolt to? I see the right two holes are for both master cylinder bolts, and the left two holes are for the shock mounts.

*I used 1/8" 1018 steel, nothing special, easy to bend, very low cost material

* The second bolt hole goes to a 90 degree bracket that bolted to the vertical surface of the shock tower that I added. Restraining it in one direction did not get the results I was looking for - If you watch the way the master cylinder is actually moving, it's in an arc - not a straight forward line. Adding this second mounting point really made the difference. You will really notice on a high speed track turns...

I made this set up because no one made bolt on brackets (lots of weld in ones thou), so two winters ago I made it into a winter project - I just like making stuff up - stress relief from work - I was going to sell some of my other project work - but don't have time to sell them - so I'd rather just share the info... I also gave out my ram air hood inserts drawings for 4th gen trans am's a few years ago (to make it into true ram air) - not looking to make money - just sharing info.

Does the brake booster need to be removed to install this?

To all the people I e-mailed the DXF files to - could you please post pics and give feedback as to their performance when you finish them.

No, the brake booster does not need to be pulled, but to attach the second mounting point, the shock needs to be pulled, to use the drill template.

Neat, I like this version better as well. Wish I had a means to cut this out easy. If anyone wants to make an extra PM me how much you want for it shipped to 60447.

Make a copy of that drawing. Seal it in an envelope, and address it to yourself. ( Take a video of the document and you putting it into the envelope and sealing it.) Then take it to the post office and send it back to yourself registered mail. DO Not Open It. Put it away for safe keeping. That way, if a company starts manufacturing this. You have proof its your idea. You should have called BMR and UMI and a few others for them to either make, sell, and you get royalties, or just sell the idea period. Its just a few phone calls. You already have the proto type, blueprint, and testing done. You have already done all the work.

Nice job on that part!!! Its your idea. GET PAID. Or someone else will.

TTur1996 Thank you for the advise. I actually already did the mailing it to myself before I posted it. The wife had me start doing that when I first sent my drawing for the ram air hood inserts a few years ago.

It's nice to have people looking out for each other - Thank you, much appreciated

All he has to do is get a bunch of em cut out on a water jet and sell em as a kit. I would like to test the prototype out I like it a lot more than the other style that is currently for sale. Ill post feedback for you.
