Default Shocks and Wheel Hop

Hey Guys,

Working on trying to get rid of wheel hop and am looking hard at shocks now. The car is a 99 Z28 M6 sitting on BMR springs with Koni yellows up front and stock shocks in the rear with an 8.8", welded LCA relocation brackets, UMI adjustable control arms, UMI panhard and relocation kit. Car is street driven and has yet to see a track but I'd like to get it there this summer.

A torque arm relocation is in the plans, but I'm thinking changing out those shocks will have the highest chance of success. Are the Koni yellows worth the extra money? If I could get away with a pair of Str.t I could nearly buy the TA relocation with the money saved. Having said that I'm pretty tired of buying things twice because I was looking to save a few bucks. Any recommendations?

Thanks

I don't see an aftermarket torque arm listed, so I assume you'll be bolting the stock one to the relocation crossmember?

Aftermarket torque arm is currently number 3 on my list. I can't do all this at once so I figured relocating the stock one would be a good start.

The torque arm and relocation crossmember might help a lot

What is your ride height like? Are your LCA's level at ride height or up in the rear at all?

Yeah, I've got the brackets and the control arms are slightly lower on the diff side. As far as I can see, shocks or torque arm is the next step.

I think you're on the right track considering shocks. If the compression damping is gone on those (original, 19 year old) DeCarbons, then the slightest inducement of bump during wheelspin is going to get the rear end hopping around like a bunny.

Would re-valved shocks be worthwhile since the car is lowered?

Have to pull the trigger on shocks right away. Are Koni yellows really worth twice the price of the Str.t?

If you're going to push the car to it's limit often then yes probably. Otherwise no

I'll make it simple.

Shocks control mass. compression damping controls unsprung mass. Rebound damping controls sprung mass and the springs themselves. Stock shocks are terrible at all of this to start with, beyond that you put on stiffer springs, which are also shorter, a heavier rear axle, and I assume a larger than stock wheel/tire setup, but maybe not being my crystal ball is on the fritz.

You missed the most important things, which are good shocks. And Sports are better, period. STR.T's are better than stock because they aren't stock and have 15+ years of age and wear on them, but Sports also have more compression damping to help with the gain in unsprung weight.

In short, you have parts that don't help the problem and are considering more parts that are not a great solve for the problem in the wrong shocks for the job.

Or not.

Too bad I had some STR.T's if that's what you wanted. But I"m running low on them anyway. But have lots of Sports of both the on and off car adjustable rear type.

I was trying to find them in Canada to no avail as border fees can be pretty crazy, so I went ahead and ordered the Sports from Stranoparts. Thanks again, I'll report back when I get them in.

Excellent. Glad to hear it, and maybe the next guy will understand shocks do a lot more than most folks think. Thanks for the feedback!
