Default 3rd gen rear shock

I've seen some people mention using 3rd gen shocks in the rear. What is the advantage of doing this, specifically with Bilsteins?

shouldn't be any different since the rear suspension is identical.

If they aren't any different then why are people running 3rd gen rears on a 4th gen?

The only time I've seen people run 3rd gen shocks is with Koni's. Yes it is to save some money.

I haven't noticed anyone running 3rd gens with other brand shocks

Shouldn't they be the same price? Most shocks I seen for sale have the 82-02 model years on them.

I'm running 3rd gen Bilsteins in the rear, but only because my friend sold them to me for cheap.

The 3rd Gen Koni's must be removed from the vehicle in order to re-adjust the shock. They're also a 4 position adjustable. The 4th gen Koni's can be adjusted on car.

Sam Strano recommends 3rd gen Bilsteins for the rear with Eibach's; the valving on the shock is quite different than the 4th gen Bilstein, and it can handle the spring rate much better.

Not because it's cheaper.

I'd think you'd need to go to bilstien for that one. Apparently they designed a more sporting shock for the 3rd gen cars, but I don't know exactly what is different in the valving (I'm running Koni DA's, so I never looked it up).

Becaue there are springs rate differences and leverage arms differences between the two cars, the axle in a 4th gen is longer than a 3rd gens. Simple to say "they are the same", but there are subtle differences......

Why do I sometimes use 3rd gen rears on a 4th gen? There is no one reason. Price is one, valvling is another. A combination, but there have been times I've used a 4th gen shocks on 3rd gens too...

So if I am going to use Bilstein HD's on my stock springs would I be getting more bang for my buck with the 3rd gen rears? or Would this only be beneficial with aftermarket springs?

Want the short answer? Each situation is different. I use 4th gen HD's when 4th gen Hd's are used in front. I tend to use 3rd gen HD's when we use Revalves to better match the more aggresive valving wanted for lowering springs. I will use either with Koni's, just depends on what the customer wants. Since they adjust you have wiggle room.
