Default E-brake maneuvers

Got a question about the e-brake on F-bodies... is it reliable enough to do J-turns and stuff like that with? And how many of y'all play with your e-brake like that?

My friend has done a couple J-turns in his Z28. Personally I wouldnt risk breaking anything...

It's a good way to destroy your rear/e-brake cable/tires among other things

E-brake only fun for drifting ( professional or non, but on a slicked track ) and in the winter on a FWD car... never driven a RWD in the snow so...

Yeah, I kinda figured it'd break stuff, considering the way the e-brake's set up on the car... like it's only fixed at one point. Didn't think it'd be reliable for playing, but had to ask.

A friend of mine had a '96 SS, and if I recall correctly, it had a hydraulic e-brake, almost like it was plumbed into the rear brake lines. Pretty trick if you ask me.

fair enough, my cars ebrake's all work fine and i use them probably more than the footbrakes, but this has only been about a year of abuse, still works fine though, lotta drifting, 3rd gear yanks, standing burnouts, if its bad on a car ive done it, and my ebrake still works great.

The e-brake on these is a drum-in-hat design. Which means there is a separate brake pad for the park brake in the mini-drum / hub section of the rear rotor. It is not a very strong design compared with a park brake that uses your foundation brake pads (integral caliper). Chances are if you apply enough at high speeds, you will damage something inside the rotor or break something loose in there and then you will need to rebuild that stuff. It was not recommended to me by a GM brake engineer that used to work on these brakes, so I will pass along the same sentiment. You can do it, but you will probably break something eventually.

You drift with an El? How do you do the e-brake? Is it in the normal position with no locking teeth on it?

I've used mine numberous times for messing around, never had a problem with it.

But, if youre using the e-brake to set up a car going into the corner, you aren't utilizing the car's own power and weight capabilites, IMO. E-brakes typically are used midcorner or for other situations where the tires decide to re-grip in the corner.

Actually, the brake design of the rear drum-in-hat brake makes it more of a parking brake. I say if you must have an e-brake, install a true one with it's own seperate caliper and lever, becuase the factory parking brake design is far from being robust for that situation.

I barely trust my parking brake to hold the car still with the wheels chocked. I think my cable is a piece of dental floss.

Mine can barely hold the car from rolling down the hill unless i pull on it all the way up. Is there a way to adjust it? One time I was letting my brother drive it(I was sitting shotgun) and about 2 blocks later I noticed the parking brake was up. Both of us didn't even notice it was up from before because it was barely doing anything.

Yeah I parked my car on a very, very slight grade driveway and tested the Parking brake and it wasn't until it was ALL the way up that the car did not roll forward.

I wouldn't mess with it unless the streets are wet or you are about to get new tires. Tell you what, when i know i'm about to get new tires, i have fun with my old ones IMO, tires for F-bodies are way too expensive to be burning through.
