Default Is Removing the Bump Stops Bad if Lowered?

The reason I ask is because I have 11" rims in rear and can't jack the car up normally. I jacked the car up this morning by the diff, got under there and looked at the space between the bumpstop and the axle and the top of my wheel to the fender. It looks as though my fender and tires would clash before my bumpstop even hit so I might as well remove them right?

Opinions needed. Thanks.

grind down the sides so they clear, but dont remove them. if you bottom out without them you can have serious dammage.

See, the way I am thinking about is if I grind them down they are going to be weaker and will probably break or bend and not work sufficiently anyway. If the car does happen to bottom out (being that I f--ked up and misjudged the road) the fenders will take the brunt of the blow because the space between them and the tires is smaller (Eibach Pro Kit) than the axle and the bumpstop. These are my thoughts on this anyhow.

If you have conviced yourself that your axle housing will never reach the stops, why does it bother you that they are there?

They don't weigh anything at all and and they are damned good insurance in case your wheel rub theory is wrong. Banging all the car's weight on a bottomed out shock is not a good thing.

My advice? Leave them alone.

The reason why they bother me if they are there has absolutely nothing to do with weight or anything else except that if I get a flat with 11" rims with a stock jack and spare I am f--ked. The only way the car can be jacked up is by the diff or the inside of the 11" rims gets chewed on the lips real bad and could even permanently damage the rim. I would like to jack the car up normally to remove the rear wheels like the 9.5s. I guess I just don't see any point for them being there with a lowered car that will run into the fenders first, thats all.

Actually you can try both. First grind them down until they don't contact the rims anymore, and if you don't like the bump stops you can just unbolt them. To grind them off get an 4 or 41/2" angle grinder. Then start grinding. Wear long sleeves because the sparks are going to burn your arms. Grind them down until you can jack the car up with the rims on and the axle will drop all the way without hanging on the rims. Then spray black paint the bare metal.

Think about taking them off BUT replace them with one that is mounted on the axel. You would have to do a little thinking but a bracket could be welded that would house a rubber stop. Line it up on the axel to hit the spot that the old one was mounted to.

Have you ever considered driving the rear wheels on a block of wood that is a inch or inch and 1/2 off the ground to assist in changing of the tire. This is what I do at the house or drag stripe and carry my light weight jack. Works for me and the wood was free. I like plenty of space working on my car and my car is not <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" /> lowered. Maybe this will help. So long and fair well.
