Default How to disable ABS?

I've heard that pulling up the ebrake lever 1 notch will disable ABS (and I believe it does). Problem is, I'm pretty sure the e-brake is dragging, despite being only up one notch. The car noticably slows down faster while coasting, with the ebrake up one notch. No good for racing.

Will pulling the fuse(s) do the trick? I need this for road racing and such.

I'm sure you can pull the fuses.

I unplugged it into the pumpkin a few years ago and it no longer worked out back, and I don't think the fronts worked either.

I'm sure I can pull the fuses too, I'm just worried it could have a detrimental effect on the braking in general. I was wondering if anyone knew for sure.

Glenn: hopefully I won't find out. You don't want ABS on an actual track. If you were to ever spin out you need to lock the brakes in a spin to prevent from arcing. When you lock the brakes the car will spin in the direction of your momentum, which means you are less likely to hit things and people are less likely to hit you (predictable skidding). With ABS the brakes will be locking/unlocking which can lead to unpredictable effects when the car starts grabbing.

Ask anyone who does actual track events (not dragstrip).

Interesting comments Dope "You don't want ABS on an actual track. If you were to ever spin out you need to lock the brakes in a spin to prevent from arcing. When you lock the brakes the car will spin in the direction of your momentum, which means you are less likely to hit things and people are less likely to hit you (predictable skidding)" I just might have to find an empty parking lot and give that a shot. That what I love about this website..you learn something new everytime you log in.

Dont kill the ABS. the LS1 uses the ABS system to control the proportioning. if the ABS is deactivated way too much braking is directed rearward. then you WILL spin. I have raced LS1's at the national level and the ABS will make you faster. If you don't want it you have to strip it out and use a manual valve. Pulling the fuses will screw you up.

When I went to skip barber and we did the braking part they used a switch to turn off the ABS. Did not effect the car any around the track or while we were doing the braking tests. They only thing is that you have to stop the car with out the help of the ABS if you start to slide. I have wilwood kit around on my car and i would like to turn off the ABS for racing. If anyone has done it lets us know or if i have to take it all out like BillS said i will just deal with it. thanks

BillS,
Hey I'm a Bill S too ! Bill Springer to be exact, and I fully concur with what your saying. I currently just do lapping days, racing schools, and the occasional Silver State Classic but, I must say that if you disable the ABS, then your automatically a slower driver. Don't prep your car to handle a wreck well, prep it to race well and that involves using your ABS to it's fullest. If you don't, then plan on being outbraked at the end of every straight by guys who DO use their ABS. The choice is purely yours .

Thanks guys, looks like I will just be dealing with the ABS. I did disable the ABS once at the dragstrip (was getting ABS inop doing burnouts and thought there was a problem), and I noticed the braking felt funny after the traps. Hard to explain, but it didn't feel like it normally did. *shrug*

Good luck out there!
