Default Bridgestone RE730 or Firestone SZ50 EP ?

Just wondering which you all prefer. I've also considered going with the Kumho MX's but like the idea of haveing longer treadwear.

I don't do any racing or really anything other than spirited driving, and for the most part wet weather isn't a concern, but don't really want to get caught with my pants down.

Not sure which route to go. What do you think?

I had the RE730s on this car and my previous TA. They are an awesome wet/dry tire, with decent traction. The only complaint I ever saw anyone mention with these - and it didn't bother me - was the road noise. Apparently, Bridgestone has recently re-engineered the compound to make them quieter. :dunno:

Now, with ~30K miles on these tires, they still have tread on them. They are rock hard though...

I have no input on the Firestones...
good luck,
Shane

thanks for the response! So thats one thumbs up for the Bridgestone. The Firestone is only $7 more per tire.. so cost isn't an issue there, I just want to know if one is any better than the other?

Thanks again,

I currently have Firestone SZ50's on my TT2's. I only drove with them on the car for 2 weeks before I took them off and had hem stored for winter. But for the 2 weeks I had them on they seemed to grip really good in the turns and straight line for the semi-cold weather. So from my quick 2 week test I liked them a lot. Gonna be putting those bad boys back on once its warm out .

WOW!! thanx for the writeup BlackHawk!
SWEET

I'm pulling more for the re730's as of now.. but I keep wanting to go for the Kumho MX's the more I think about dry performance. I've got a pickup that I can drive when it gets shitty out.

anyone with any MX experience?

Thanks again!!

I have gone through 3 sets of tires on my car. The original Firestone Firehawks, a set of Falken GRB FK451's, and just put a set of Bridgestone RE730's.

Here's my take:

Performance: The Falkens stuck to the road like glue, they gave me the most traction (in the corners and off the line) out of these 3. The Firehawks and RE730's feel just about the same as one another. So far I like the predictability that these RE730's are giving me, they break loose but stay really straight.
1. Falken
2. Bridgestone
3. Firestone

Comfort: The Bridgestones and Firestones were much better than the Falkens. The Falkens had a raised center groove (like the Michelin Pilot Sports) and they would tend to ride the ruts in the freeways. They also felt "harder" than the other two, you would feel every thing in the road. I have heard that the Bridgestones become noisy as they wear down, mine haven't gotten this far yet. I can say that I have never heard any complaints in this category about the Firehawks and mine stayed quiet all the way to the wear-bar. Based on the rumors about them getting noisy and the fact that there is no possible way to get stuck in the freeway ruts with the Firehawks tread pattern, I would have to vote on the Firestones as being the close winner in this category.
1.Firestone
2.Bridgestone
3.Falken

Looks: The Bridgestones look the best by far. Now, I did switch over to a 285/40/17 with these (the others were regular 275's) but even if they were skinnier, I think they would still look the best. I have seen 285 and 275 Firehawks and for some reason, the tread pattern seems to make the tires look skinnier to me :confused" . The Falkens looked really good to me until I mounted them on the car, I just could not get used to that center belt .
1.Bridgestone
2.Firestone
3.Falken

Personal Favorites: What would I buy again?
1. Bridgestone RE730
2. Firestone Firehawk
3. Falken GRB FK451

Hope this helps!

I had the RE 730's on my '98 SS I was completely satisfied with them for all around driving. They looked great, had good dry traction both out of the hole & in cornering & were awesome in the rain. My only complaint, was that they didn't make any noise on second & third gear scratches. I know to most people that would sound stupid, but I liked chirpin' the F1's whenever I wanted to & being able to actually hear it. (That's the only thing I ever liked about the F1's though.)

Have you considered the BFG KDW's? I've heard nothing but great things about them & they seem to be fairly close in price to the RE 730's. If they're anything like the KD's I have on my '02, then we're worth every penny. These tires are by far the best I've ever felt for a street tire!

Just my .02

Yeah, I thought about the KDW's, but thought that the Kumho would be a comparable tire for a good bit cheaper.

I'm at a loss. They all seem like you just can't go wrong. I change my mind something like everytime I read something good about one or the other. I probably just need to shut up and put in a order to TireRack.

Thanks for all your replies!!

Shane
