Default GM rotor warning...

we all know GM fbody rotors warp but beware of GM truck rotors. I was driving our 97 Chevy pickup and had the rotor break in two. The rotor cracked around the center section and seperated. I was traveling quite a distance and luckily for me- it occured within 3 miles of a brake repair shop and I was able to limp in for the repair. The mechanic said that I was the 4th GM truck this year that they repaired with this problem. I was telling this story to another mechanic and he said that that was a common problem with the original GM rotors. He said he never heard of it happening with an aftermarket rotor.

Wow. That's crazy. I think GM should outsource their work to Brembo or another reputable brake vendor.

90,000 miles- Western PA. The rotors were 9 years old and the vehicle tows a trailer so they do see some abuse. I would totally understand it if I warped or wore the rotors down from over heating them but to have it totally seperate into 2 pieces and hear that it is a relatively common occurence is unnerving-enough so to suggest that no one buys GM truck rotors.

I have seen it in my shop on more than one time . Every single time they have rusted where the composite hub is connected to the rotor surface. I understand your concern, but in the salt area rotors are not lasting 9 yr. Im lucky enough to get 3 to yr max out of the new stuff. Just wait another yr or 2 when all these 00-02 car/trucks start rusting all the brake/fuel line out. Im seeing big time rust issue with alot of newer cars/trucks!!!!!!!!

possibly-the vehicle tows a trailer and so the brakes are worked hard. But our 91 chevy van hasn't had an issue in 220,000 miles and I don't have a clue when the rotors were changed last time. The one mechanic said that the composite center is a cheap money saving design and that aftermerket rotors are much more durable. Again IMO GM rotors suck-just read all the posts about original fbody rotors warping.
