Question Stiff brake pedal...problem?

Hey everyone,

I test drove a 1998 Z/28 convt. yesterday and I noticed that the break pedal was very stiff and had very little travel in it before it wouldn't move further. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks

It could be one of many things. I would check to make sure that you don't have any stuck caliper guide pins. That should be done occasionally anyway so I'd recommend narrowing out that possibility first. Clean out the pins and the holes with brake cleaner and put some caliper grease on those pins.

+1 on the bad power booster, makes the car a PITA to stop. On my car the power booster had a vacuum leak, so you might try and listen for that when pressing on the brakes. Mine was so bad that when you pressed down on the brake pedal the car would sometimes stall from the vacuum leak.

If it is a bad power booster, how much do you think that would cost to fix?

On gmpartsdirect they have it listed at $192.02. I dont know how much it would cost to install, I did it myself and it was pretty simple. The only hard part was getting under the dash to unbolt the damn thing.

Do you think it could really be a bad power booster with only 22k on the car?

yes i think so!...anything can happen to cars these days even with very low mileage...sometimes the worse thing for a car is to sit in a garage and not drive it ! a 98 with 22,000 miles hasn't been driven much ,if you are buying the car why not have them fix it first...you posted up you took the car for a test drive right? so you have not bought this car yet?
