I got a ticket the other day for no muffler on my Camaro. The kicker is I have 2 mufflers on it. I have LTs, 3" x-pipe, and Dynomax bullets. The cop pulled me over ( he is a real jerk and no one likes him, he has a very bad rep with anyone under the age of 50; I live in a college town) because he was driving behind me and said he could tell that my car had no mufflers ( you can see the exhaust easily from behind). This was the conversation. He said "Sir, I pulled you over tonight because I was driving behind you and saw you had no mufflers. Do you have mufflers on this vehicle?" I said, "Yes sir. I have 2 of them." So he leaned down real quick and glanced under (it was night) it and said, " No, there are no mufflers on there, would you like to show them to me? " So me already pissed off because he randomly searched my car adnd gave me a sobriety test for no reason ( previously like 7 months ago. Another lon stupid BS story that I got to go on)said , " Sure." I got out walked around to the side and got down on my side; so did he. He pointed his flashlight directly at my bullets and I pointed at them and said, " Right there, they are Dynomax bullets, they are basically glass packs." He stood up and said, " No, those are not mufflers." And I said, "Well, what are they?" He said, " Exhaust extensions." I said, " Ok, whatever." And I started to get in my car and he said, " Where did you buy them?" I said, "Jegs." I got back in my car and he preceded to his car with my license. He came back (after he called for back up) and said, " Sir, I am writing you a citation for no mufflers on this vehicle. Oh and by the way, whatever idiot convinced you that those are mufflers is sadly mistaken. That exhaust tone sounds good for a race car but not on your car, because it isn't a race car." I said, " Ok. Whatever."

So I look at my ticket and he filled out the date as Jan. 31, 2008 and that I was due in court on Feb. 12, 2008. Also the violation clearly says " NO MUFFLER". Not noise violation or anything of the sort. I have my receipt for the exhaust, the page with the exact part number off of Jegs' website clearly stating that they are mufflers. I also have pictures of my car on the lift with the exhaust on there. And if he desputes it saying that I just installed it I have the owner of a muffler shop that welded in my o2 bung for my wideband like 2 weeks ago to back me up.

I would like to know if I have a chance to get this dismissed. By the way I live in Stephenville, the loud ***, straight piped, big ***, black smoke blowing diesel capital of Texas. And no one around here gets tickets for lack of mufflers on their trucks. He even said he writes diesel guys tickets too. WTF ever.

Oh he also told me that a muffler has to have " baffles".

Personally I'd fight it. You have plenty of documentation showing that they are indeed mufflers and that's what you had on the car when you got pulled over. However you might want to get proof that they're DOT approved, assuming that they are. If they're not DOT approved and that's stated somewhere during the sale of them I'd just pay the ticket 'cause I don't think you'd win that fight.

 

I personally would dispute it, for a few reasons, 1) the moron can't remember what year it is, so how does he remember what a Muffler looks like? and 2) Bullets are Mufflers..kinda....I got pulled over here when i had mine for the same reason, my setup was simular cept, I had L/T's Y-pipe, Bullet, dump after the axle....got that charge dissmised with a dated pic on my phone, and a digital cam when I put them on, buuuuuttttt.... they got me for not cats

 

I would definitly take that one to court. Sounds like he was just trying to be a dick.

 

Look at it this way... at least you aren't in CA.... out here they'd do that and rip you a whole new one while they're at it.... then send you to the state Referee.... but they're technically "resonators" You can fight it but isn't it a fix-it ticket??

 

They can't get me for no cats becuase they have no probable cause to look for them? Right?

 

i would show them a picture of the mufflers already installed instead of a picture of the process of the install. and you have lots of evidence that they are mufflers and that the cop is an idiot. just take it to court you have nothing to loose for except some time. good luck

 

if you take those pics above to dispute it, they don't need it since you are voluntarly showing them the proof they need for not cats...that's exactl how they they got me in the courtroom for not cats...yeah, I told on myself that day.......now if you fix em to where they don't/can't see the fornt half of the x-pipe then yeah, they have no reason to check for them since the cop himself said "it's not a race car"

 

Those pictures were taken tonight at the shop I work at. I have had the exhaust that way for like 4 months, since I put the cam and stuff in.

I got a ticket for "no mufflers" about 2 yrs ago in one of my old LT1 Z28s. I had True Duals with bullet mufflers. I just paid for the ticket, bc the exhaust was illegal. Not only do you have no cats, but your car is also dumped before the axle(which is illegal). Just pay for it IMO.

 

See I like real honest answers. I posted this on DFWStangs. Ha. Nothing but people talking ****. And I have been a member on there for 6 years. Thats why I like this site so much better.

Exactly what I was about to say. It does have mufflers (sorta) but its not all the way out from underneath the passenger compartment. Either way, its not legal

 

couple things, first, the court date has past already, and second why arent the mufflers welded all the way up???

 

the definition of a muffler is so vague or it was 2 years ago. I was a state inspector and read in our book the definition of a muffler and if memory serves me correct the definition was a device that reduces noise by a certain decibel. don't quote me on this it has been a while but like stated above your exhaust is still illegal being dumped. as for cats I may have removed heat shields off a c5 and welded them on a ory to look legit before.

 

look up the violation for which you were cited. then see if you have any argument. they cant charge you with a new violation in court. they can only find you guilty or not of the violation on the ticket.

i would fight it if you have any logical argument. we just beat a ticket last week that we got from a real jerk. it felt good. it does take some of your personal time.

 

Eh, I wouldn't call those mufflers... either way, its illegal, which all the above have stated...

fight it. i hope your not as lucky as me though. its illegal to modify your exhaust in ok, its a $144 fine
