The main reason they used the LS3 is do to the thickness. Here is a video explaining it.

if you add a 88mm turbo it bumps the ci up by 23 and when you put on a cam it also bumps the ci up about 23. so if you do both then you get 59ci extra. but the best mod for these cars is turning the ls1 into a dohc so that the vtech kicks in

Wow, this thread got WAYYY off topic fast.
To the OP, The ZR1 IS the upped hp version. They aren't going to get rid of the LS7 anytime soon, since it's already so good. Maybe in a few years, they will do something new, but not yet. Until then, just have yourdad buy a ZR1 or a Viper SRT-10 ACR. Either way, he'll like it. Also, if he thinks THOSE are slow, I want to know what the hell he's used to driving, because that's ridiculous!

Correct, i believe they only changed the pistons for a lower compession for the supercharged ls9. The ls9 has the the same bore, stroke, and even same designed heads, they just used a better source of aluminum for the block and heads, and of course the forged internals
