been thinking about buying a luxury car
what do you guys suggest . I want an 01 or 02 car . I was thinking about something german engineered . Would prefer it to be standard too . Any suggestions?
Edit : fairly low cost maintenance would be good too

No price limit? M3. you can pick up an '01-'02 M3 for 18-25k. If there is a price limit, a 3 series. Can pick one up for 10-15k.

People are GIVING away 1st gen CTVs right now! There are a few '05 Vs in the for sale section for $15k or less.
No offense to the previous poster, but why the F#@k would you want a BMW 3 series when you can have a V for less money (nothing against German cars 'cause I own one).

well I was actually looking at a 3 series. Price range is 10 gees cash . But I don't really feel like bending over and having german parts butt rape me haha . Hmmm however a Caddy does intrigue me . I'll keep it in mind. Anyone else want to chime in ?

As far as quality is concerned, M3 and even the 3 series > CTS-V.

+1 for a CTS-V. If I remember correctly, you want an 06 or later to avoid the differential problems. I think it is one of the ultimate street sleepers. I have not owned one yet but I have done some serious looking. However, my last caddy was a 1997 El Dorado ETC that needed to go to the dealer every other month and it was $1000.00 plus per visit. Fortunately I had bought the extended warranty (100,000 miles) and dumped it as soon as that warranty was up. Good luck!

Then explain why the 3.2L I-6 in the E46 M3 ran about than a half second behind the LS2 V's......with 67 less HP and a lot less torque? And the E92's ran almost a full second faster with similar power levels? Yes, the LS2 has a lot more bolt-on and N/A potential. However, these BMW I6's and V8's love boost.

For $10K? Yup...
I personally don't classify 3-series as being a luxury car. More like a premium sport coupe, or what ever. If BMW is what you are looking for, check out E39 body style 540i. Those are nice, too.
I have nothing against German cars, but if you really want luxury feel from the early 2000's for $10K, go and check out Lexus LS400/430. Now that is some luxury right there.
I'm not sure if you can get S-class MB in that price range yet, but that could also be an option.
No matter which one you choose, if you take them to the dealer, you will pay an arm and a leg. There are, however, lots good MB/BMW/Lexus boards around, so DIY'ers are not necessarily SOL.
Just my 2 cents...

Saved me some typing. Those cars with the launch control are beasts.

I work in an office with many guys who own BMW and a few with Mercedes. Up until now I still really thought of those brands as a cut above. Not anymore. Those guys always need someone to pick them up or drop them off at the dealership because their car broke down again. My 200k miles oldsmobile has less problems than their new "luxury" cars.
I am sure some models are good cars as with any company, but none of the guys I work with have gotten them. My boss owns an AMG Mercedes and it is a piece of junk. He has had to replace 3 leaking wheels. The car is not even 2 years old and they wouldn't warranty it. They told him he must have hit a pot hole even though there was not so much as a scratch or scuff on any of the wheels or tires. Not too mention the other stuff they haven't warrantied. He has had so many other problems it isn't even funny. I could go on for days.
I would find a good BMW or Mercedes tech (there are some on this board) and find out specifically what models / drivetrains are ok. Parts can still rape you, but they might want to make some $$ on the side and help you with repairs.
