Default What in the hell noise is this?

Just got back the car from the transmission shop. I had it rebuilt. I don't suspect foul play. However, I just noticed the noise last night. Maybe there's a connection. I don't know.

What could this knock/rattle/whatever be?

Sounds like a flexplate to me. Is the motor running fine other than that noise, good oil pressure etc? Get the car on some ramps, most of the noise should come from the bell housing and back of the motor if its the flexplate..

Well, apparently, it's the water pump. That would explain the leaking coolant I saw last night. It did seem like the noise was coming from the front of the engine and the transmission guy noticed it, too, but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't transmission-related.

How different is replacing the LS1 water pump than on the LT1? Is it easier?

VERY easy. Just make sure you get new gaskets along with the pump. Part number 12559271.

Doesn't the water pump gasket usually come with a new/rebuilt water pump?

Not sure. I've never replaced one, but I had to remove/re-install one when I swapped oil pumps on my Z28. For that process, I made sure to get new gaskets.

yup, better to have too many than not enough....and if the new part does come with one, you can always either return the extra or keep it as a spare
