Density Altitude.. It is the main contributing factor of why cars run better in some conditions and worse in others... Heat/humidity/elevation play a roll in making you run slower times.. Go to a lower elevation track in cool weather and you could potentially knock off .5 or more, all depends..
A DA of 2000+ is about average
3000+ is on the high side
1000+ or less in good air
The rest of us dream of running in -DA.
This is also where a lot of "internet numbers" come from. When someone says, "my buddy ran 12.9@110mph BONE stock". That doesn't necessarily mean his car is faster than a car that ran 13.4@107mph. The 12.9 car could be running in a -DA and the other could be running in a 3000+ DA. Which would make the 13.4 car faster (if DA was equal of course).
Hence why when comparing setups or drag times you have to ask what DA is or it tells you little. Just like if you run in June and run 13.5 in a bone stock 2.73 car and then change gears to 373s and run in February with a 12.8.. Guess what, gears didn't make you drop almost a full second, DA did.
Hope that explained it a little bit.

Pretty self explanatory, just keep your slips after you run.

If it's a 3.23 geared car the following will net you mid 12's. Good set of DR's on your 16 inch stockers, longtubes, 3200 stall, tune, and a lid. I had a buddy that ran mid 12's all day with this combo on a 99 z28 auto.
Also, keep it out of overdive, and turn off the asr if you have it.

I've seen in the past as well as myself that over time it seemed there was a carbon buildup on the sensors inside the MAF which caused them to misread and cause engine issues. Nothing major, just bogging and little things. But also the risk of sucking something through to the intake is possible. That could be a rare chance but still could happen. Maybe it's just me being overly-cautious, I don't know.

....all the mods in the world won't make you faster until you can plant the power you already have.
Like was said multiple times before.........you need tires. And practice launching a little.
But, on a side note, I'd recommend checking out Dallas Raceway. IMHO, much better track.
