My 870 and 500 stay loaded and ready to rock n roll, along with an M&P and a 1911. If **** hits the fan I will be king of the hill. An open floor plan may help somewhat when it comes to long guns but tactics will equal that out. Plus I'd rather unload 6rnds of buckshot in an enclosed space rather than one round of .45. I like my ability to hear.

+1 more to the mossburg 500. I have one that's 20 years old. Hasn't really been fired much, but the action is still smooth. Holds 6 shells, and is 38" long. No one is going to hear mine rack.

And getting a dog is a good idea. My male pitbull has a pretty scary bark. But he's really a lapdog puss. Everybody that meets him, loves him. But he'd go fkn crazy if someone was kicking in my door. My female pit puppy is going to be the same way.

Sure a lot of you have seen this, but here's an incident that happened not too long ago right here in Harris County.

Bastards. This thread made me go spend money. I picked up an 870 tactical w/ breaching break today for 300. Now to find some 3" buckshot. Cabellas in ftworth has 4 or 5 of them left.

Just to let you guys know, I do have an alarm system. That being said the average police response takes at least 3-5 minutes if not longer. Even with the police on the way I can't imagine what would have happened if the crook made it into my house.

The Academy by my house had a Remington 870 12 gauge 7 shot home defense style but it was $370. It seemed a bit over priced but i'm not a gun expert. Any one have a gun shop in mind with good prices?

budsgunshop.com, compare with them. remington 870's are some of the most reliable, versitile and well designed shotguns around. my hd gun is an 870 wingmaster that was built in '75, its only hiccup in 35 years? a broken firing pin. my grandfather shot this gun god knows how many rounds and i've put in 15 years shooting clays, birds and a good diet of 00 buck. i like my mossberg 500, i LOVE my 870.

all you guys are talking about "tactics" and maneuvering around ****... Ill tell you this, if you have no training on how to use a side arm, GET A SHOTGUN....if you have to ask about what firearms to get, GET A SHOTGUN. Its the most user friendly and by far the most intimidating. I have had CQC training with both and even though i can shoot both, I would prefer the 870 for use in my home. the gage is easier to lay down than a drunken prom date. just do what the general says.. " just point and click, point and click, point and click..."

Exactly.
It really isn't much differentt to move around with a house with either, unless you hold your pistol abnormally close to your body. Arm's length is where I shoot my pistols and I use both hands so going around a corner is just as cumbersome. The difference is when your adrenaline is pumping you're going to have a much better chance of hitting a moving target with shot vs. a single bullet. Remember the intruder probably won't just stand there and let you get a bead on him, and unless you've had some good training it all goes out the window when the SHTF. Think trying to trap shoot with a pistol vs. a shotgun.

You're talking CQB. Totally different from defending your house.

Theres a difference between that and going to another room, picking up your kid/s, opening doors, etc and still be able to defend yourself on your way back to a safe room.

If you want 12 gauge with 00 buck. Keep it in the safe room.
