Default Need Advice on moving to Houston

So my parents will be relocating from North Carolina to Texas. The company my step mom works for decided they need a rep in Texas. They are pushing for them to move to the houston area. They will be setting up the office in home so a daily commute will be pretty much non existent. What they are looking for, is a nice family community 100k+ homes, low crime, good schools, and any good colleges around too. Any advice on nicer areas of houston or areas to avoid will be appreciated.

LMAO @La Porte...he said "nice houses with LOW Crime, and GOOD schools." I say this because im also from the Deer Park/ La Porte area so i know all too well that area and most of the time its the same ol faces doing the same ol BS and always the same Mfs that ruin the rest of the cummunity and bring it down...and trust me there seems to be alot of that kind of people around LP.

On another note i cant say much because i now live in Houston and even though i have a newer nicer house i dont like my neighborhood and the city of Houston can be a pain in the *** vs. living in a smaller surrounding city. If driving isnt too much of an issue i would say check out places like Katy, Sugarland, and maybe Texas city. Places that are a little further away from downtown but not too far plus housing is better prices (more for your money).

noooo stay away from houston...they will steal your socks before they will steal your shoes...jk really jk....top of my head league city, friendswood, kingwood, katy, deerpark and a few others....not really in houston but around like the other poster said out of the loop....but there is a few inside in houston.

i live in wallisville great homes and property for great prices but schools is another story.....good shopping but min 20-30 minutes from either deerbrook or baybrook.....the three best malls to me are memorial, baybrook and galleria.....i think they have sites to see what schools are good.....everyone might have a different opinion of ghetto, good or bad schools.

The reason I say laporte is not only do I live here but there are reasons. The schools here are accredited and recognized. The neighborhoods are quiet and have low crime. There are different price ranges for the housing. All around great place. Still has a small town feel and about half way between beach and downtown. I wouldn't move to any other part of houston besides maybe pearland if I didn't work in the field I'm in. Good luck.

Katy, Parts of Cyfair or Sugar Land, is a safe bet and nice area and fairly convenient. No area of Houston is perfect though, Katy north of I-10 has become a little sketchy. Most people choice of residence is generally dictated by commute times. Alief or third ward if by "work from home" you mean slangin rock.

Surgarland does not have very many 100K homes. For Low crime, good community and good schools too...I would suggest Copperfield, Cypress, some parts of Spring/Woodlands or Tomball area. Lonestar College and U of Phoenix as well. Plenty of 100k homes and good people. You can take 249 to the beltway or 290 and hit 610 but its typical Houston traffic though. Just be prepared to drive 15-20 miles in 30-40 minutes.

He did say $100K+ but Sugar Land also does have its bad area's. I suggest Anywhere around highway 6 and Austin Parkway, Common Wealth, First Colony or Richmond is another good place. They have good homes. It is also right next door to Sugar Land. Also could always try Missouri City (Newer parts like Sienna Plantation).

Some parts of older Sugar Land you can get a nice house/quiet neighborhood easy access to major roadways.
Anything nice inside the loop will be big $$$.
The company should be willing to send your parents on a few visits to scout out areas.
Good luck.

The area I just moved to in Spring (Villages of Spring Oaks or something) has been great so far. If it weren't for HOA's I would consider living here more permanantly.

It would help to know what you guys plan to have access to? What do you like?

Of all of the places listed above, I would lean towards the Woodlands. If your parents are going to have to drive around Houston for work or anything like that, it might be good to understand exactly where they will be headed to most of the time.

I would avoid anything out 290 as they are about to start tearing up 290 and that will go on for a long time making it miserable.

5th ward! j/k

The Houston area is huge with a lot of variety. I grew up down there and barely scratched the surface on exploring the area. If they want piney woods stick to the north and NE side. Its more hilly west and NW than south and east. If they want coastal, SE. Prairies and swamps are covered too. They could even live near the space center. Nice communities can be found all over. Choose based on area preference and where the majority of your mom's clients are if she ever has to travel to them.

Personally, I'd make sure to live outside the City of Houston and Harris County in general. The further away from them the better IMO.
