Looking at a 98' WS6 on monday.... questions
Hi!
Im new to the forms but i'm from The Woodlands area. I am headed out to Kemah on monday to possibly buy my first WS6. Im wondering tho if the price is right? I am having him meet me at a mechanic to do a pre purchase inspection...
The guy is asking $13,000 for it. Its a 1998 Trans Am WS6, manual with 62,170 miles, one owner all its life, Carfax checks out. Everything is original, no mods whats so ever. The only thing that has been replaced is the battery and serpentine belts. Never was raced or in any accident. Garage kept all its life, no scratches, dents etc. All leather interior is pristine. Was owned by a 65 year old lady who recently had hip replacement surgery and cant drive a standard anymore.
This is low milage car, so to me $13,000 is reasonable but wanted to see what you guys thought. Thanks for any input.

A 1998 car with low mileage I would say is worth 10k. 1998 cars have unique sensors and did not come with ebony interior. The good side to 98s is that the door panels dont crack
if it was a 2002 with black interior and tons of maintenance records it would be worth $13k
the price isnt terrible I just wouldnt pay that much for a 98 since it is the slowest year made. The floor mats are on the wrong side of the car, are you sure this car isnt at a dealer? The old lady story is bullshit, we all know these cars were abused

I thought the same thing as everyone else here as soon as I read your description. It's a 10k car all day long. If you truly want it, and it's as clean as you want it to be, then maybe you throw a little bit more at it to keep from walking away, but I wouldn't be comfortable at the 13k mark. I'd look for a later car at that price.

It does look really clean but not enough to justify $13k. Like others said I personally would pay no more than $10k for it.
There just happens to be a Z28 here for sale

Really appreciate all the feedback!
My current car has 260,000+ miles on and it finally just died on me. I don't have anything to drive as of now, have been borrowing my bf's srt8. So looking to pick up a car pretty quickly, which could cause me problems i'm sure. I have had my eye on a WS6 for the longest time, and i'm finally able to purchase one.
Not too experienced in haggling car prices as this will be my first car purchase. Taking a few people with me.

I was also looking at this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pontiac-Firebird-WE-FINANCE-2001-PONTIAC-FIREBIRD-TRANS-AM-WS-6-6-SPEED-T-TOPS-52K-TEXAS-DIRECT-AUTO-/370828059355?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item56571322db#ht_22080wt_1182but haven't called. Doubt they would take $13,000 for it.

I doubt that they would too. Just about everything on Texas Direct Auto's lot is overpriced. While they always seem to have a lot of good inventory, they tend to know it, and not budge on their higher prices. I'd stick with the first car and try to talk them down on it, with comparable vehicles in hand.

A clean car is a clean car. Forget blue book ratings, how much is it worth to YOU? I'd offer him 12k. If someone offered me only 9k for my 98 WS6 I'd punch em in the throat. I have that much just in the shortblock and heads.

like you mentioned though if you need a good car then you should be able to get it for 12k, however if the car is still on the original clutch it will most likely need to be replaced around 90k miles. Also look for any oil leaks under the car make sure that the oil pan doesnt look wet with oil and there is no oil on the transmission bell housing
it is very common for a car that age to need a new rear main seal and oil pan gasket. The other problem area is the steering rack under the front of the motor. Look for stained boots on the rack where it has been leaking from
