I have actually just fully filled out a LinkedIn profile in the last few weeks. I recently was hired on by a contractor out a Phillips 66 in Sweeny, I start fairly soon. It's not glorious pay @ 15/hr, but as a monitoring technician I'll basically be covering every square inch of the entire plant, and working in tandem with Process Operators and their equipment on a daily basis. I'm hoping to use this position to leverage me into an opportunity to network with the operators and hopefully land a job at some point. I'll be done with the damn PTech degree this year, just playing the waiting game at this point.

What do you do out there Cody? Any tips on using LinkedIn to my advantage? Do you just selectively add people and hit them up about job opportunities, or is there some kind of system of going about this that I'm unaware of?

J-Rod I think you completely misunderstood my post. Not sure what you thought I was implying. I understand economics. I wasn't implying companies weren't cutting jobs or that the price of crude has no impact with our wages. I was merely stating our wages aren't directly driven by fuel prices at a 1 to 1 ratio. There's many things that influence fuel prices & our wages. The larger more successful companies have invested big $ in production technology so it can be done much more efficiently. Trust me if or when crude goes up these companies may rehire but their not going to throw $ away to employing more than whats needed. Technology has came a long way so the amount of "Required hands" has gone way down. Many of these companies have major mismanagement issues with the "Good Ol' Boy" system behind the wheel. Well at least the good news is at least the transportation industry is showing great profits lol. I've read some reports that crude may bottom between 10-15$ by the end of June.

I'm enjoying it while I can. Was one reason I got a job 3 miles from the house. But I still drive around a lot.

It's WAAYYY more than that.

Try 300,000 plus globally and rising every day.

Oh ...and if you don't feel sorry for oilfield workers now....just wait a year or so when this downturn has an affect on the global economy. It's a delayed effect. Then you'll be crying the blues right there with us.

By the way I am enjoying the cheap gas also. Just wish I had a paycheck to go with it.

It amazes me how some of the folks I know of just pissed away every single cent they earned with those high-paying Eagle Ford Shale jobs.

Hopefully, prices will rebound some over the next several months and ease everyone's pain who has been affected. I'd rather spend an extra $50/week on gasoline than be out of a job.
How about I've already thought of that....quite awhile ago.

And that's not even all of it....

Oh, and I have 5 cars, 4 of them are PAID FOR. The are not going anywhere....The only reason my truck is not paid for is I got an outrageously low interest rate on it.

As you can see I already had to make a small withdrawal for Christmas, but it wasn't much when you consider the big picture...

Unfortunately I don't see anything effecting me in any way. Both of my houses are worth nearly 150% of what they were when I got them at this point, gas is great. All my vehicles are paid for. I'm 3 miles from work. My job is not going anywhere. I know I only make about 50k a year, but I manage pretty well and will be getting my business started in a few months only to start increasing my income further and may make it a full time gig depending on if I want to keep my warehouse job just for the insurance.

SnlpEZ, I am an electrician here. I assume you will be working for EMSI. It really won't get you any where as far as operations relations. Where it will help you is with the opportunity to make a reputation for yourself as a solid hand. (Face down, *** up) Hit me up when you get here and I will be glad to visit with you if you have some questions.

Yup, EMSI indeed. Everything I know is what they told me. What you say makes sense. The guy who hired me is also going to BC for Process Technology classes, and he's not an operator at this time obviously, so it's not surprising. I guess a reputation as a solid hand is... something I guess.

Will definitely hit you up when I start, hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later as I've been in in the process of hiring for over a MONTH now... Holding out for next week, but not betting on it.

Don't work for them.

Get on with a company as an apprentice for a trade or something like that..

Very few people make a decent living off monitoring and there is a lot of bullshit involved...

And the **** you Learn or they teach you, it doesn't carry over to any other jobs really...

As I mentioned earlier, I'm finishing a degree in Process Technology this year and next year a Bachelor's in Industrial Management with a specialty in Process Operations. Definitely not going to be an apprentice for a trade at this point. I also don't plan to make a living off monitoring. From what I can tell the turnover rate is not... great, but as I'm not even halfway to age 24 yet and still in school, my options are limited and it's what I have to do to pay my bills and get more plant experience on the resume. I've filled probably around 50 applications for a Process Operator position, but since I'm not someone who knows someone, I'm pretty screwed at the moment.

This is job is just something to get me by for now and attempt to network as best as I can.

I don't know the guy, but posting that info is not something I would do which is why I did not include the shots when quoting him.
