Default Tow my car.. or ship it..

Fellas,

Just need your input.. should i tow my 00 WS6 or ship it with auto transport company?

I will need it shipped to california.. thing is ive never towed a car.. so im more concerned with the safety aspect of towing, and the hassle of pulling into places with enough space...

i did get a quote of about $1000 to get my car transported. Uhaul quoted me 5-600ish for car trailer.

Thanks again guys..

You need to add your fuel and other expenses on top of the U-Haul cost. A trip to CA isn't going to be super cheap. If I made that trip with my trailer it would cost me about 700.00 in fuel alone. So 1000.00 to have it shipped is a pretty good deal. You will spend more than 1k to do it yourself easily if you have to rent the trailer.

I packed up and moved to San Diego in 2005. I rented a uhaul, and pulled my car on a trailer. One way trip was 1600-1800. That's rentals plus gas and food.

$500 to rent a car trailer for a couple of days seems a bit steep. How long do you plan on having the trailer? Doesn't UHaul charge like 40-50 a day for their car trailer?

That trailer rental seems steep. I just rented one from them to tow my car to the tuner. I want to say it was $30ish for the day.
How long do you plan on having the trailer? Also if you ship the car are you going to fly to California?
If you have to fly the cost would be shipping+flight vs towing it with trailer rental.
If you have to drive anyway (I presume you have a truck to pull that trailer that has to get to Cali too) the cost would be food/gas/hotel+ shipping vs food/gas (bit more since your towing)/hotel+trailer rental.
That's mostly interstate driving so no biggy towing. Swinging around gas stations and hotels with a 12'-15' trailer isn't a big deal. Just make sure you have someone who knows what they are doing strap the car down since you have never done it before.
If I had to drive the distance in my truck anyway...I'd just tow it. Not all shipping companies are created equal. Make sure your comfortable with who is shipping if you go that route.

Will you fly if you don't have to tow it or do you have to drive anyway to make the move?

Either way, I'd ship it. Save on fuel, hassle, liability, and time.

Thanks alot for the input guys....

I will be driving to cali.. yeah its all highway... so it shouldnt be bad. But wifey is paranoid of the car back there...lol.

As much as i would like to tow it, i am leaning towards shipping it. Plus i dont have to worry about anything or people messing with my car if i stop overnight..

Out of curiosity why move to Cali? Not knocking it just curious. From your name Id assume you are in TX. Ussually see them leaving there and coming here, not the other way around.

For local rentals, yes. One way rental is whole 'nother ballgame.

$1000 to ship is a good deal - I paid about $500 to ship one from KS to TX on an open trailer

If it was me and you are making the drive anyways, I would tow it. Plus if you tow it then you know for a fact that you will take care of it.

Will it be a hassle when you go to eat somewhere sure but I mean it is just one trip. How many days do you plan on driving there?

From Houston to LA is like a 24 hour drive if I remember correctly. You could easily do that in two days only sleeping somewhere one night if you want to minimize the chances of your car being messed with at night.

Also my advise, do not stop in big cities in the middle of the night or when it's dark for that matter.
